I haven’t been in Hungary/Romania for a couple of years now, but when i was Fanta WAS the only thing i’d drink. I’d smuggle over liters to the states…oh how i miss it Unhappily its everywhere but the US. All of central/south America and Europe >don’t ask me about asia, but i doubt it<. For those of you living close to the mexican border…you could probably find it in some of the little mexican stores. I found it once there, but haven’t since. >sigh…reminising and Romania and Fanta<
If that’s true, I figure Moxie must be the carbonated analogue to the Antichrist.
I think it’s unknown outside of New England, which is good news for the rest of the world. I’d describe it as a combination of Dr. Pepper and extra strength cold medicine. I figured it was popular in the days of yesteryear (you know, before they learned how to extract sugar from beets) but my father (who actually drank Moxie religiously – and when he got diabetes, he switched to Diet Moxie!) said, no, even his friends thought he was weird for imbibing the stuff, and that was back in the 'thirties.
My friend told me a funny story about his first encounter with the noxious liquid. It was his birthday party and his mother was shopping for soda to slake the thirst of the young partygoers. One particular soda was on sale. It had a bright orange label and there was a picture on it of a smiling man. So, the cans were opened and he and all his little friends had a taste. Well. Ruined the party atmosphere just like that (snaps fingers). My friend realized then, the man on the can was laughing at them, not with them.
Moxie does have its devotees, though: http://www.xensei.com/users/iraseski/
