I’m not victim blaming at all. I’m saying ignore as a first step while advocating for a quality of life rule change. But if something has been a problem for a decade or whatever and there is an “ignore” tool that would mitigate the issue then at some point one has to wonder why it’s not being utilized.
Yeah yeah yeah. Take your condescending, patronizing stuff elsewhere.
Sure, it’s subjective–but that scene was described as a scene of magical healing positivity, whereas I’m guessing the hammer scene wasn’t portrayed as a good thing.
As a kid reading it who didn’t know the first thing about how people decided to have sex, I thought it was great. As an adult looking back on it, it gives me the heebie jeebies.
Hammering a kid to death? That’s a pretty straightforward no-no. If an author portrayed that happening as like a mystical healing thing the heroes did to bond with one another, I might be creeped out in the same way.
Since this guy is apparently going to keep me waiting in his outer office forever, I think I will respond to this thread.
First off, I freely admit that the two threads Chronos closed were started out of pique. I was irritated by the disclosure requirements and so chose to mock them. I was rather expecting those to be closed, so I have no complaints.
The thread from yesterday is another story. I was not playing "I’m not touching you"with that one. It occurred to me after I dictated it that someone might object to the inclusion of slavery & bastinado, so I included a disclaimer. And still got slammed and even mod-noted. I am a trifle vexed at that, because I rather think that certain persons on the board would have found reason to be offended without the disclaimer anyway.
I have not been ignoring threads in a TMB and BBQ pit about me, because I honestly didn’t know they existed. I have never been in the habit of browsing through either form, and my visual handicap makes doing so now quite difficult, as I would have to listen to every thread title to do so, and certainly in the case of the pit, such threads quickly grow tedious to me. Had not a trio of dopers informed me via p.m. of those threads, I would never have known they existed. I wasn’t even really aware vet yesterday’s thread had been closed, Though I was aware of the mod warning which also came via p.m…
I am not going to get all shirty about this issue. I won’t include any more mocking disclaimers, although as I said, the one yesterday was not intended to mock. But lest I inadvertently offend anyone, I will do this unless the mods object:
Whenever I start a thread that I am ambivalent about, I will include an NSFW tag in the thread title. Anybody who feels that this requirement is onerous can assume that, in my own head, the tag is a coded insult to Etruscon’s.
What I won’t do is stress out about it or read pit threads about myself, not least for the reasons given above. The dope is not my real life. In my real life, I have kids, a job, about 17 bazillion dollars in medical bills to pay, and cookies to make.
I think you should include rape and bestiality into every thread you start from now on, so you get to use the disclaimers.
That’s great, Skald. Will you be continuing the misogyny, degradation, and gender violence? Part of our discussion that you’ve missed is that they’re objectionable to a quite a few people and contribute to fostering an inhospitable environment for women here.
He’s ambivalent about that. I think that’s what he said.
Yeah. So even with the ability to ignore and the presence of appropriate trigger warnings you still want to censor what others want to read and/or write? :dubious: I think you know what the answer is you your question and you’ll probably end up disappointed.
The “I’m not your daddy” line contradicts the complete innocence of your disclaimer. It looked surprisingly similar to the ones in the thread that were previously closed. However, I’m glad to hear that you won’t be putting anymore disclaimers out of pique, and I’m certain the NSFW tag will suffice.
If anyone feels a thread you’re not ambivalent about requires such a tag, a report will help out. I, for one, will not assume that it was left off on purpose or out of pique.
Yes indeed, this was all about censorship from the beginning, not some nonsense about unnecessary disclaimers.
It’s a privately owned board, they have every right to censor stuff, and they do it all the time.
And last time I checked, trolling is against the rules. Which is what the “unncessary disclaimers” were. Duh.
Wow. Disclosing upfront that a thread contains depictions of sexual violence “irritates” you? Clearly you’re the real victim here. And note, not a single apology for causing discomfort to enough posters that a new rule had to be made. You made your own bed with this one, Skald, and you’ll have to lie in it. I would say more, but since we’re not in the Pit, I won’t.
Also, I’ll assume those in this thread who were digging in their heels and bitching about the threads that were closed because he wasn’t breaking any rules will be retracting what they said, since Skald admits here he was mocking the rule?
Mocking the rule now a terminal offense or trolling? Because I seem to recall a lot of deliberate mocking of language rules in the pit.
Really, you have evidence of a top secret government plot to crack down on free speech starting by slightly policing badly written rape fan fiction on an obscure message board? Surely you’ll be showing us the evidence, since this is BIG.
Remember what Cecil said?
My boat, my rules.
And here I thought it was about fighting ignorance. I never realized censorship and arbitrary application of rules towards that end was part of that effort. This is a shameful incident on the reputation of this board. If Cecil wants to censor graphic sexual material he can do so, and maybe let us know what else should be censored in the name of fighting ignorance.
Oy vey. No, it’s not shameful. Someone mocks the rules, they’re told to knock it off, they post again in a manner similar to the manner they were told to knock off, they get a warning. That’s kind of how I want the moderation to run.
Mocking rules may be a god-given right, but this is an atheistic board. If you’re told to knock something off, ya better go ahead and do it.
Fortunately, yours isn’t the opinion that matters. Think what you want.
The problem with fighting ignorance is the too many people can’t recognize it on the battlefield.
I was marking the ruling in the cupcake & superman threads. Not in the thread from yesterday.
But as I said, I am not inclined to argue this issue.
