I am thinking about moving out of Burlington, VT for a while, and I am looking for the best possible place for me (Jabe) to live. This is what I am looking for:
A very large music and art community. I like the blues and R&B, as well as what you might call “jam” music like Phish and String Cheese Incident. I also am interested in improv theater, both as a performer and spectator. Sports are cool once in a while.
Being from VT, I am not used to a lot of people, so I am looking for a place that is not too large, so places like NY and LA are kinda out of the running.
Food, I love food. Most places have their own special dishes. I like just about anything.
People. Again, being from VT, I am not used to much diversity, so I am looking for a place with TONS of it. I love people who are different from myself (white)
Well, that is all I can think of at the moment. Thanks for the help!
Your best bet if you have no specific objectives is to visit a lot of places.
A simple week’s trip to Florida will show you a dozen states, all with different characters, different climates, and different ideas about what is high-density housing.
Don’t bother with Seattle. It’s got everything you want but it’s negated by ridiculous property prices and terrible traffic. I’m gettin’ the hell outa here.
Jabe, I just moved to Chicago - it sounds like this place would jibe with a lot of the things you are looking for:
It’s the HOME of the Blues, tons of places to see live music!
It’s the HOME of Improv - tons and tons of professional and amateur troupes. Every third person I meet does some kind of theater.
My neighborhood (Wicker Park) is home to one of the largest communities of working artists in the country.
It is a huge city, true, but very neighborhood-focused. Rents will be higher than what you are used to in VT, but a lot lower than places like D.C., NY, and San Francisco.
Feel free to email me if you have questions. I moved here 2 months ago and absolutely love it.
Thanks for the replies. Sorry I wasn’t able to come here earlier and talk to you people. I only have internet access at work, and then only some of the time. peace,
