You know, the one that is full of religious extremists or social engineers? The one that doesn’t lie and resort to dirty tricks? Where th fucking hell is the party that is touch with the peole and not the powerful minorities that pull the strings? Where is the party that represents me, the fiscal conservative and the social liberal? I know that fucking constituency is out there, so why can’t we get a voice in the political arena, on the talk shows and in the backrooms of power?
I know it is pointless, but we need a third party that represents the underrepresented middle!
Where is my party that isn’t afraid to exercise military power to save HUMAN LIFE, the only objective measure of military success, rather than just trying to preserve our oil sources or a couple American soldier’s lives, not for them, but for ratings points? America has failed in Bosnia, Iraq (Gulf War I), and Sudan, and Iraq again (GW II), and thats just in my voting lifetime…
Where’s my political party that doesn’t like to tax it’s citizens, but at the same time doesn’t blow billions of dollars on crap wars and useless stuff?
Where’s my party, that’s genuinely progressive rather than the GOP-lite that I’m having to vote for? Sort of like the Greens, only with less college-student idealism and more sense of what will practically work in running a country. I want us to move more towards the mainstream of the civilized world, along the lines of Canada or Western Europe. Where’s my damn party?
Where’s the political party that upholds “freedom of oppurtunity”, and realizes that that does not mean that everybody will achieve the same degree of success with that freedom, and that that is ok? Where is the party that equates “freedom” with “responsibility”, and can make the tough decisions without looking for a scapegoat? Where is the political party that isn’t Big Brother or Big Mother? I want a political party that is laid-back Cousin Phil. You know, the one who will loan you a few bucks if you really need it, but otherwise just sees you at family get-togethers. The ones he always brings his guitar to. That guy.
Perhaps if independant candidates ever start gaining ground the stranglehold of the two parties can be broken.
Of course, the problem with getting this started is the ‘Nader’ issue. People will be reluctant to support an independant if it means making it more likely the worst of three choices in their mind gets elected.
May I live to see it. The two parties are nothing more than machines dedicated first and foremost to their own survival. Frankly I can’t see that either one of 'em actually represent much anymore beyond whatever it takes to win–and too often that amounts to blatant appeals to the absolute lowest common denominator.
Vote for US or those evil, scumsucking villains will take away your Bible, Medicare, guns, business, home and family pet! Be afraid, be afraid, be afraid! Everybody else is out to get you, so choose our team NOW!
It’s bunker mentality, and 99% of it is pure spin and stupidity. I’ve almost given up trying to sort out what/who might actually have the will, brains and canniness to actually serve the whole country amidst all the chaos.
It’s a miracle so many individuals of real statescraft–on both sides of the aisle–have actually managed to survive and serve the nation. But the whole system has become so ingrown and decrepit that party labels mean less than nothing. The underlying brands are degraded.
I disagree. At least in my mind social welfare programs are not synonymous with social liberalism. What I want is a government that is fiscally conservative and then stays the hell out of my life and does not try to cram their version of morality down my throat. It is none of the governments business who I marry, what I do to my body, or how I die. YMMV.
In fact, during the relatively recentpolitical gauge thread I scored as a strong conservative on fiscal matters and as a moderate liberal on non-fiscal matters. The fact that this score is even possible seems to disprove your statement.
I want this too. I also want a government that is strong on national defense, that is pragmatic and does the best it can to benefit the most people with it’s decisions.
Basically, I want Republicans without the social conservative baggage. But given that I have to choose between the two or be marginalized, I come down on the right. I disagree much more with the Democrats on policy than I do the Republicans. And I’m not worried about the far right either. They can’t be indulged too much without alienating the crucial middle 15 percent that swings national elections.
