I have a couple of nails on the wall by my door. When I walk in, I usually toss my keys on the table. At some point later in the night, I find them on the table, and hang them up.
My mom once found her keys in the trunk of her next door neighbor’s car. Well, her neighbor found them anyways…
I’ve actually never lost my keys, and I’m in my mid-40’s (central time zone). Wife occasionally does, but she collects keychains, now had 9 connected to her keys. Too large (usually) to lose. Mine are either in my pocket or on dresser.
On the kitchen table. We have a lovely key hook, handmade by a friend, that we do not hang beside the front door because the front door is a floor below the rest of the house. If I left my keys there, I wouldn’t know they were missing until I got downstairs … leaving them in an obvious place makes it easier to know when you need to hunt for them !
Once I spend ages hunting, eventually decided to take Mr Cowgirl’s keys, rooted through his pants pockets and found not only his keys but …
MY keys.
but our marriage survived.
A related anecdote:
Roommate #1: [runs breathlessly back into the house, having just left] ‘Has anyone seen my wallet?’
Roommate #2: ‘Have you checked the toilet?’
R #1: ‘Thanks!’ [runs upstairs to bathroom, grabs wallet, leaves house]
I don’t keep cars in my garage (it’s a workshop), but that’s how I go in and out of the house. My keys are kept on the counter by the door, so if you’re in the area, break in and help yourself to a vehicle in the driveway.
We have a key box mounted next to the side door. My keys are always either there or in the righthand pocket of my jacket. They are literally never anywhere else, and I never, ever lose them.
My wallet, on the other hand, has little legs and wanders the house according to whim.
Twice, I had to have people mail them to me after I’d been traveling on vacation.
Twice, in the ignition of my locked car (with the engine running). Jumped out and forgot to take them with me (or turn off the car).
I now put them on hooks just inside one of the two doors to my apartment. For some reason, not being able to find my keys just enrages me, and I can’t handle feeling that way on a daily basis anymore.
In the attic
In the cellar
at the bottom of the swimming pool
in the mailbox or
with the dog’s food (buried deep)
I’ve learnt the hard way
that keys are one thing I cannot long keep!
On the kitchen counter
In the jacket pocket
In the bottom of the backpack
On top of the television
On the coffee table…
Wierdest place? The freezer, and I spent 2 days looking for them.
I have got to remember to take a car key and an apartment key off the keychain so I at least where they are…and so if I lose my keys, I don’t lose them all (as would happen now).
I have had my share of frantic searches for keys when I was in danger of being late for something.
That (nearly) doesn’t occur since I have put all my keys on a humongous key ring together with a large orange whistle and a key recovery service tag (just in case I do manage to lose them somwhere.)
The strangest place where I have found a key was my right hand (where it had been all the time while I searched my apartment with mounting desperation).
During the day, my front pockets have my keys and change, and my back pockets have my wallet and checkbook, and usually a pen tucked in next to the wallet. At night, all this goes on top of my dresser.
I’ve occasionally locked my keys in a car (though it’s been a decade or so since the last time), but I’ve never lost them.
