Where the well known version of a song is a cover

I forgot to mention that the Chad Mitchell Trio’s The Marvelous Toy is a cover of Tom Paxton’s.

Joe Cocker covered the Beatles song With A Little Help From My Friends.

He also had a cover of Traffic’s “Feelin’ Alright” that I hear more often on the radio.

Which reminds me that in 1969 the Hollies did a whole album of Dylan covers, Hollies Sing Dylan (US title: Words and Music by Bob Dylan). It was awful, in the extreme, but a lot of people (like me) bought because the concept sounded great. There were earlier examples of some orchestra doing instrumental covers of The Beatles, but that’s the first one of a rock artist doing a whole album of another rock artist.

I think. If I’m wrong, I’d like to know.

Bobby Vee recorded a tribute album to Buddy Holly in 1963 with some of the Crickets.

There was a pretty famous version recorded by the Irish Rovers. The first version I heard was by them. I didn’t know Tom Paxton had written it, until this thread.

Someone once made an instructional video for programming an analog computer that used the Irish Rovers version of the song as an intro.
