Where to Retire

In appromately 13 months, we will be in a position to retire early. We are relatively young (50 ) with varried experiences on our C.V.'s.

Any suggestions on good places to retire: Option to work to pay expenses.

I’d like to nominate this for the most vague OP of all time.

I hear Tahiti is nice, so I’ll suggest that. “Dear, pack your bags, some guy named Rhummy on a message board says retire to Tahiti! We gots to go!”

Can I come visit?

Personally, I’d like to retire to either Thailand or Indonesia, although Mexico and Tahiti sound really nice, too.

Within the decade, Mr. tlw and I will be retiring to Costa Rica. It remains to be seen if we’ll stay there permanently, though.

We’re looking at New Mexico. The climate varies enough to be interesting, the artist communities in Taos and Santa Fe are a dream-come-true for me, and housing is relatively cheap (we’re in suburban Chicago). We probably won’t be going anywhere until all our parents are gone.

Martin County (East/South Coast, Florida, USA) is lovely and warm. There are lots of Canadiens there, too!

Las Vegas!
Warm, plenty to do, still affordable, major airport, sunny 364 1/2 days a year and everything is open 24 hours a day.

No, don’t go to Florida. It’s too congested already and IME many of the people who move here hate it and quickly leave for some other state. And the heat/humidity is really awful.

I suggest the Yukon. It’s beautiful.

You say that like it’s a good thing.

eenerms, your location says “overseas”. Where are you right now? What do you want to do in your retirement? What sorts of activities do you enjoy? Are you multilingual? If so, which languages do you speak? Do you want to be near lots of other retirees or not? What kind of health are you in? Will your pension insurance cover you outside your home country? (US Medicare is not valid outside of the USA from what I could find) From your use of the term CV I’d guess you’re not from the USA.

Marcie and I are considering Mexico, though Belize doesn’t look bad. If my ex would move, I’d like to go back to South Dakota.
