So next Sunday, a friend and I are taking a small road trip down to Pontiac, Michigan to see one of my favorite bands play an establishment calledClutch Cargo’s. We’ve never been to Detroit, or the surrounding area, and we’re wondering - just where is this place? Is it in a good neighbourhood? Are there hotels nearby? And should we be able to rely on the mass transit system or will we be taking taxis?
We’re catching a bus to Detroit that afternoon, and coming back Monday morning. So we’ll need a place to stay for the night. Any advice would be grrrrrrrrrrrrrreat.
That’s almost an hour from me, but I’ll try answering some of your questions.
Here’s a list of nearby hotels by expedia, since we have zipsquatdoodly for mass transit, you might want to try and get something within walking distance. More hotels from Yahoo.
The neighborhood is a qualified okay, it’s college kid city right there, with 5 or 6 big clubs in one area. It’s not genteel, but it ain’t 8 mile either,eh?
Too bad you won’t be staying longer, JD’s dueling piano bar has great shows.
That area was “renovated” (through about 25 years), so the specific location is OK. (They used to have a festival to launch hot air ballon from plain left by the razed buildings behind the church in the 1970s.)
Are you coming Greyhound? A tour bus? An independent competitor to Greyhound? (Greyhound comes into Pontiac and Detroit is 24 miles South Southeast of Pontiac, so it is not clear why you’re going to Detroit to visit Pontiac.)
This website provides links to various public transportation services around Metro Detroit and outlying Michigan cities. There is a Detroit/Pontiac route along Woodward Ave. that appears to run all day including weekends. (In Pontiac, it follows Widetrack Drive that would let you on or off about 1/2 block from Clutch Cargo’s.) Look for Route 450. Schedules and maps are pop-ups, so hold the Ctrl key if you have a pop-up blocker on your web browser.
I’m originally from Pontiac. Be sure to visit Walt’s Coney Island on M-59 in Waterford. That’s my dad’s place. Tell him Leslie sent you.
