No one complained about the dimensions of the Coliseum; they were too busy complaining about the fact O’Malley moved there in the first place. And the dimensions of the Polo Grounds were not exactly ignored. They even had a term for home runs that landed down the foul line at 257 feet: a Chinese home run.

When the ballparks were built, those sort of odd dimensions were the rule. People did observe how short the fence was in the Coliseum, but it was just another baseball quirk like the Green Monster or the hill in the outfield in Crosley Field (IIRC).
