Where would you be without computers?

Well, I’d be BUYING my porn, but not much else would change.

Well, my degree is in archaeology, but I’ve been doing tech support for 10 years, so hopefully I’d actually be an archaeologist.

I also wonder if not having internet access/a computer would have made it harder for me to ignore the fact that I had panic disorder and forced me to get treatment sooner. Having an always-on connection made it easy for me in the worst of my agoraphobic times to feel like “No, I’m ok, I’m talking to people/doing stuff/looking for jobs” when I really was NOT OK at all.

But basically I’d be a completely different person I think. So much of what I do for fun, for work, etc. is based on my computer.

My whole career path for the last 15 years has been based on the fact that I am better at learning how to use computers and computer programs and coming up with creative solutions using existing software than most of the other people in the industries I’ve been in. I have been nearly indispensable at every job I’ve held for the last 10 years because of my skill with computers. Period.

Without computers, I would have had to stay in college an extra 6 years. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’d have almost certainly dropped out of grad school, as doing theoretical physics without computers sucks. You have to be, like, smart and stuff. I don’t know what I would have done instead. All of my career interests involve computers in one way or another.

A university graduate, with a pretty good academic record behind me, lots of friends, a healthy appreciation for alcohol and drugs, a wider exposure to literature, employed in a reseach lab, single and loving it.

Instead I’m a college dropout, with a shitty GPA, poor social skills, no interest in mind altering substances, a broad knowledge of scientific trivia, enlisted in the Navy, married to a beautiful wife and loving it.

Still flying, but most likely working a LOT harder every time I’m airborne.

A few things in my working life that have been made easier for me because of computers:

Engine controls
Electrical Systems
Air Conditioning/Pressurization Systems
Fuel Systems
Flight Control Systems
Alert/Warning Systems
Communication Systems
Navigation Systems
Display Systems

Like many professions the advent of computers has eliminated jobs (anyone remember engineers and navigators on airliners?). Both have been replaced by automated systems (some airlines still use engineers on older airplanes that require them, but I think navigators are gone except for the military).

The bad: reduced jobs.

The good: increased efficiency and more importantly, increased safety. Multiple redundant systems and better displays mean pilots get the information we need quicker and clearer than ever before.

Net result: Much better because of computers.

And no one needs to point out that the anal-retentive pilot is the first one to analyze what computers did to his job and reach a net plus or minus result. I know, you know it…just move on, nothing to see here…

I’d be thumbtacking little bits of wisdom to the official Straight Dope Cork Board.

Pretty much the same stuff.

I don’t have a computer at work.

Other people have computers at work, but what they do on computers they would be able to do without them. Slower, but not much slower.

I would have to write out a bunch of stuff, like I used to. But I would not have to write out a bunch of stuff that I do now, since no one would have to have corrections for print outs. I would just write the corrections in like I used to.

On the whole, the biggest difference in my life would be my recreation. And the fact that I would still be a six word a minute hunt and peck typist.

So, probably more time reading books. And less time writing my unsolicited opinions for strangers to read.

Tris

Probably talking to friends through that thing that people call a tele-phone. And only people I’ve met in real life. I’ve met people on the internet that I never would’ve met in person, just because they were people that I normally wouldn’t come up to on the street or something.

I probably would’ve also ended up getting better grades at school. The internet has been such a huge distraction to me; it’s kind of sad when I think about it. :frowning:

In other words, my life would be more borind

Ugh. I meant “more boring.” And the post does end there.

Oh it doesn’t bear thinking about.

I would staring down the barrel of all my research data having to be done by hand… heirarchical multiple regressions, ANOVAs etc. - eeek … and they are the easy analyses as I am statistically challenged.

And that would be after searching through university libraries and mountains of journals for my literature review, rather than sitting in front of the computer and surfing through abstracts to find the likely candidates, and then downloading and printing the full text articles - all in the comfort of my bedroom.

watching tv?

aye, without an interactive station you’ll still have the tv, at least for a while. and growing fat in your couch, many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to trade that remote for a keyboard and mouse, and tell our enemies that they may take away our tvs, but they’ll never take our COMPUTERS!!

couldn’t… resist. your regularly scheduled thread will resume after this post.
