“The Third Man” is a noir film set in postwar Vienna. It doesn’t portray the city kindly.
Let me know if the police give it to you; I know someone who found $15K, unmarked, in a bag, and turned it in, just like that.
After 90 days, it would be hers, if no claimants arrived.
They (SFPD) lost it.
She said, if she ever found any money again, she wouldn NEVER give it to the cops!
They apologized, but it wasn’t theirs, and they wouldn’t give it to her. She didn’t sue. I know that it exists, because several others in the store had seen it, but it disappeared. I still wonder if she would have won a lawsuit. She had a receipt…
I would visit the tropical areas of the Northern Territory of Australia. I’d dip into the drier areas for a day or two.
Then we are not alone in our disdain! We felt like real idiots when we realized our mistake.
But I truly loved Prague. We stayed at a very nice hotel, near the castle. And ate some truly exquisite meals. And it was by far the cheapest place we stayed. We had zero issues with language barriers. Great shopping. Great beer/bars. Great museams (including a very bad ass communism museam). Huge thumbs up!
Sorry to hear about your friend. I’m pretty confident I’ll get the cash if it isn’t claimed, though - Arlington PD is pretty darned good at what they do.
Easy.
Thailand.
$1500 for Airfare, $1000 for 3-4 wks depending how much you want to party hard and live large.
I’d just pick a, not as developed yet, beach and get me a little thatched bungalow with an attached bath, and a seaview. Lie on the beach, collect some shells, eat a lot of seafood and fruit, get a killer tan, swing in the hammock, read a lot of books, eat a ton of thai food, snorkel, rent a motor bike a couple of few times and drive about, make some awesome and interesting new friends, couple of nights dancing and drinking till sun up and come home feeling like a new human being!
If I ever win the lottery, it is from just such a spot that I will decide where to go next!
I don’t care about the $2,500 holiday question (sorry!) but kudos to you for turning the money in. Please do update us on whether or not you get it.
I don’t know if I could be so good if it were me. (Sad face.)
I think it does. I can’t remember though.
Yes it does.
Would that be the Arlington, Virginia, police department? Which road did you find the money by???
That’d just about cover a week or so in Antarctica. I’d go there whilst it still looks normal and for the unusual nature. How many people do you know who have been to Antarctica?
Seriously? People can do that?
A friend of mine went to Antarctica last December. His pictures are spectacular. It’s not a place I had ever considered going before, but now I really want to go! So that would be high up on my list.
The other places I’d most like to visit would be Iran (I’d wait for spring for this one) and Tanzania. I’m super super fascinated with Iran, and thus far have not worked out a way to get there, but I’m sure I could if I had a couple thousand bucks lying around. And I’ve never been to Africa and I really want to go! Tanzania looks amazing.
But I’ve also been wanting to take a nostalgia trip and visit Bulgaria and Israel, though. So it would be a tough choice. I’m not sure I could swing both of those in one trip for under $2500, though, it would depend on airfare.
I’ve always wanted to go to Iran too. I even went so far as to find out the price of a visa from the embassy a few years ago. I suspect it would be difficult for a single woman to travel there, so if you’re interested in a male travel partner to go there, get in touch. I’m serious - I’m fascinated by it.
Earlier this year, I spent two weeks in Morocco for about that amount (half was with a tour group, half was on my own).
Istanbul would be my choice.
[nitpick]I think you mean Wien, Austria.[/nitpick] Sorry you didn’t like it.
I’m more of a nature guy, but what about heading to Scotland? Fly over, rent a motor, do a whisky tour, visit Edinburgh.
Would the Antarctica trip be just a cruise, or do you land on the continent (or at least, one of the ice shelves contiguous with the continent)?
You could cruise to Hawaii, with airfair included, for $2500. At least, that’s what I’d do. Good luck on whatever you choose to do.
I will! I’m unemployed right now, so it’s not going to happen any time soon, but I will keep you in mind. I’ve even taken Persian, so I can say such useful things as “my name is Kyla” and “I like cheese”.
When my friend went, he flew to Buenos Aires, then to someplace really far south in Argentina, and then he took a boat. They slept on the boat, but during the day they would land and wander around. Let me see if he has pictures up in a public place.
Okay, I don’t know if this is open to the public, but his Facebook album is here.
