Where's davidm? In the hospital recovering from a medical screwup.

Googling shows that Meripenem can cause seizures. Bingo!

I think the second one was Augmentin, which can have seizures as a rare side effect.

Some of those drugs are on restricted-use protocols for a reason, but if you need them, you NEEEEEEEEED them.

They stopped the antibiotics yesterday. Today in PT I stood up and walked (with a walker) with little difficulty. Previously it was a struggle. All I can figure is that the powerful antibiotics were weakening me.

So maybe I’ll be back on my feet sooner than I thought.

I just spoke with a GI doc who looked at my surgical report. My symptoms may be explainable by the large amount of bowel they removed.

They may have to put in a PIC line and feed me via TPN.

Well damn, the hits just keep on coming.

BUT, in spite of everything, it sounds like you are improving and prevailing over your medical situations, which is excellent news.

I continue to pray for your betterment and swift recovery. I’d offer you a hug but with all the tubes and lines and stuff it would probably hurt.

I just hope the TPN feeding isn’t going to be for the rest of my life.

My daughter had a PIC line when she was hospitalized for colitis because her colon was so inflamed that anything passing through it would cause her intense pain (over and above what she was already experiencing). She had to have more than one IV “tree” because of all the stuff they were pumping into her.

Anyway, she had her entire colon removed. The PIC line came out about two weeks after surgery and by the time she was discharged she could handle something resembling a normal diet. Biggest no-nos were highly acidic foods.

I’ve been missing my colon since the 70s. Now I’m also missing the ileum, so I may be on TPN for months, with the goal being my remaining bowel adjusting to a normal diet.

I checked with the mods, and went with Cafe Society.

They’re probably putting in the PIC line and starting TPN today.

I hope it leads to continued improvement, despite the (hopefully) short-term inconvenience.

Does this mean no food at all by oral route, or limited diet?

Clear liquids.

It’s a start. Hopefully the adjustment with go quickly, and the rehab will move more quickly as well, now that they’ve identified the cause of some of the problems.

Have you had a chance to start on Fire and Fury?

In your shoes/bed I’d be asking the nurse if vodka counts as a clear liquid.

Does it? Cause it is.

How was today?

About the same. Clear liquids and TPN.

We tried to do some PT but didn’t get too far. My blood pressure was way too low and I got dizzy standing up.

They’re talking about moving me to a rehab center.

Anyone in my area have experience with Manorcare Health Services in Montgomeryville PA?

They appear to have the best ratings of the choices I’ve been given.

Davidm, you have my sympathy in all this.

In my experience, rehabs in general are not where the “A” team workers (nurses, CNAs, doctors) end up. Service and attention to patient health is not great. My grandmother was in several of them for extended stays, and if it wasn’t for family being in to visit every single day, and keeping an eye on things, I think she might have died.

I honestly believe the single most important criteria when choosing a rehab is proximity to family, so they can stop in frequently. You have a brother helping out, is that right? Pick one as close to him as you can.

I’m being moved to a rehab today. This is the third rehab. With the first two I ended up back in the hospital. Let’s hope that the third time is the charm!

They took some time looking for a place they were confident could handle my specific issues so hopefully it will work out.
