IIRC, there used to be an option in the User Control Panel called “Invisible Mode”. To quote the description text from another Vb based board, "Selecting “Yes allows you to surf the forums without appearing in the ‘Logged In Users’ list.”
I’m pretty sure we used to have it here–it seems to be gone. Was it ever here? Can it be brought back or put in place if it wasn’t?

All you have to do is log out. You’ll still be able to browse and read all the forums, but you won’t show up as a logged in user.
“Invisible Mode” is turned off on this board.
Since we do not display logged-in user names publicly on the board anyway, it’s not an issue to begin with. That’s what “Invisible Mode” controlled, on the user level.
If we visibly displayed user names on the site, you would have this option visible and available for you.

There’s also the logged-in indicator next to the username in threads (currently, this is a small blue circle for someone offline, and a green one for someone online). Presumably, invisible mode would render this circle continually blue.
I note, incidentally, that I saw this thread shortly after Fenris’ post, and his circle was blue. This indicates that he either logged off quickly after posting, or that he is invisible. It’s possible that even though the current setup has no controls for this feature, that a user’s visibility status might have been preserved from its previous setting.
That’s what I’d noticed/thought too–look at threads and you can see some of those indicator lights are blue and some are green, and if you go back and look at the same thread later, they change so they are displaying who’s on line and who’s not.
No such luck. He’s green now.
However, if you punch in F1, F3, F2, F4, Caps Lock, Caps Lock, Ctrl, Alt, Ctrl, you can access “God mode,” which will allow you to answer questions in a cogent and compete manner that is accessable to even the most inexperienced layman, squelch debates so soundly as to completely end threads, give urbane opinions on any topic, delight all readers with even the crudest fart stories, and flame your detractors so badly that they throw away their computers in shame and don yak hairshirts.
So, since we’ve determined that people are being identifed publically by the messageboard as being on-line or not, can we have “invisible mode” back?

I’m not sure “invisible mode,” (which has been turned off for as long as I can recall), controls the blue light/green light. It didn’t affect it when it was the checked boxes. But I’ll go look at it and see.
