Where's the "Read this before posting a computer problem" sticky?

[nevermind]

From Xash:

There are 10 kinds of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don’t. This thread is for the latter kind.

There used to be a thread in GQ that gave you some good info on how to fix your computer from viruses or spyware, but that was more than 101 years ago.

**As in, 10 + 10 = 101, for large values of 10? **

10 (binary) = 2 (decimal)
101 (binary) = 5 (decimal)

Wow.

I checked to make sure I wasn’t getting wooshed, and I think I re-wooshed the Mod.

To make it worse, Google throws me back to the master:
http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/1382/does-2-2-5-for-very-large-values-of-2

Heh. You win  I didn’t catch that.:smack:

And you discovered the Infinite Loop Of Knowledge[sup]TM[/sup] that leads you back to the Dope.

With all the people coming and asking about malware, maybe the word Malware or Virus ought to be in the sticky’s title, so more people will see it.

It could be something like Part 10: the Malware Edition. or the more boring Part 10: How to remove Malware or Viruses.

Makes sense. Title updated to:

How to protect your computer from malware

Administrator

At the risk of just being irritating, “Malware” is jargony - almost everyone will know what a “Computer Virus” is, (even if they confuse it with worm, trojans, et al), whereas my brief unscientific survey of casual computer users nets a very low percentage who know what “malware” is. One person told me it was the program that delivered e-mail.

OK, I changed the title to:

How to keep your computer from going super-kapow

j/k

You’re an evil man, xash.

This isn’t so much about malware as it is about NoScript, the Firefox add-on. I’m a faithful mac user, and late in high school had a part time gig cleaning off people’s malware/adware. I’m still pretty good at it. However, I think I’m a little too complacent in my mac usage, hence the NoScript.

But I’m a bit confusd. For example, which scripts should I allow? I want the website to function, but am I doing a bad thing saying “allow jcrew.com” or should I allow one or two of the scripts listed?

For example, I just tried to get on http://thepioneerwoman.com/ Now, with noscript, it won’t let me mouse over those 4 different icons a bit down the page; usually if you mouse over, it’s for her various sections: Home, Confessions, Cooking, etc. Do I allow the whole page? How do I make my choices permanent?

And what else should I be doing to make my mac secure (besides using Firefox and better than average experience on a Windows machine)?

And shit.

Actually this should be more of a General Questions thing – it’s not about what’s happening here at the Dope.

Could you ask this again in GQ? That would be much more appropriate than here. I’d like to just close this thread and direct people to GQ.

Oops, sorry about that! Thought I was posting in the right one…

No harm, no foul.

You’ll also get a much better chance of getting your query answered in GQ than here, so it’s to your advantage to restart this in General Questions.

Just wanted to add that I have solved virus problems before by going to YouTube or MetaCafe and watching vids about solving my problem on a second computer. That’s at least one reason for having two computers.

David42, since this is an old thread, it would be better to post any new information to the sticky in GQ. I’m closing this.
