Ok color me stupid but I’ve looked at the top left of many pages on don’t find a subscribe button. How does subscription work on this site ie; have to subscribe to threads or the whole site for the annual rate?
Thanks and please don’t laugh I seriously do know how to subscribe on internet sites!
Go to User CP, then go to Paid subscriptions.
-
Go to the thread you wish to subscribe (i.e., get notices).
-
Click on THREAD TOOLS.
-
Click on SUBSCRIBE TO THIS THREAD.
-
Click on PERFORM ACTION.
That is what you mean, correct?
Though we’re also happy to have you join the Straight Dope as a subscribing Member, which you access through the UserCP by clicking on PAID SUBSCRIPTIONS and following the prompts. We accept major credit cards and PayPal.
Can you subscribe to threads if you’re not a member? When I log out and click on Thread Tools, the subscription option isn’t there.
No. You need to be logged in as a member in order to subscribe, I believe.
I have my option set so that I am automatically subscribed to threads in which I post.
Go to User CP.
Select Settings & Options then Edit Options.
Scroll down to Default Thread Subscription Mode.
There are options to choose from. Mine is set to No email notification.
ETA: I learned this after being a member for something like 5 years!
You need to be logged in, but you don’t need to be a member (i.e. paying).
A. To subscribe to an individual thread (that is, recieve notifications when a new post has been made. Notifications can be by email, or by clicking on USER CP) you have two choices:
-
Set up your preferences to subscribe when you post (and you can choose to get email notifications or not)
-
Go under thread tool as Tuba suggested
You do not need to be a paying member to perform either of these actions. As guest you can do this.
B. To be a subscribing member of this site, go under USER CP and choose paid subscriptions. Pay as directed (Paypal or by Credit Card) and enjoy the word “member” under your name. If you want to subscribe to threads after doing this, go to A.
You do not need to be a paying member, but you do need to be logged in to an account, because the subscription feature is tracked by your account. “Guest” accounts (i.e. nonpaying members) work. If you log out of your account, the computer doesn’t know whose threads you are trying to be subscribed to.
