which 7 sports teams dont end in 's?

It’s a typo-- take if from an alumnus. Besides, the title of the page is enough to clear that up.

Cleveland Steamer?

Who would want two?

New York University Violets is also not a very intimidating nickname. Even if they mean the color and not the flower.

called the “Macon Whoppee.”

IMO, one of the best all time nicknames.

I think it was in the IHL. For all I know, they could still be around.

There isn’t any city or state called “Tampa Bay,” as far as I know. There’s a Tampa, and a St. Petersburg, but Tampa Bay is a body of water. So the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers all qualify. Plus you have the Carolina Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes.

Columbus Crew (MLS)

I think Utah had a minor leage baseball team called The Buzz and the WNBA was the Utah Starzz, but apparently the team no longer exists…

Couple of things:

I think the poster that mentioned Syracuse having changed its name might have been thinking of St. John’s. Formerly the Redmen, St. John’s changed to the Red Storm in the early 90’s I believe. I remember reading (on these boards?) that “Redmen” wasn’t a Native American reference, instead having something to do with the U.S. revolution(?).

Another team named for a region is the Arizona Cardinals. I think the reason teams do that has to do with TV rights. If I remember correctly, when there were teams in L.A. other parts of Arizona would see the L.A. teams instead of the Phoenix Cardinals. The Florida Marlins are another team. Does anyone in the state, other than a handfull of folks in the south, care about the team?

Is Manchester United’s mascot/emblem a “United”? I would have thought they would have some other mascot, like other teams have: Arsenal (Gunners), West Ham United (Hammers), Tottenham (Spurs), Liverpool (Red Devils). I’ve always had the impression that mascots don’t matter that much for Premier League teams (or any soccer team that isn’t in the U.S., for that matter).

The KC Wiz had to change its name because of the “Nobody Beats the Wiz” stores on the east coast. As far as I could tell, no one in the Midwest had any idea such a store even existed, so I have no idea why there would be any sort of dust-up. The SLC Buzz got into a bit of a spat with Georgia Tech over the Yellow Jacket mascot; I don’t remember how it turned out.

I think “nickname” would be a more appropriate term for the UK soccer team names than mascot/emblem. Manchester United’s nickname is Red Devils, so you were almost there by attributing it to Liverpool. I think Liverpool are simply “The Reds”. You are correct that these names don’t matter much, as indicated by the fact that I cannot tell for sure what the Liverpool one is, even after visiting their official web site.

The nickname is used a lot for some clubs, such as those you mentioned (apart from Liverpool), and almost never for others. It is often used when it is part of the official name or an extension of it (Spurs, Hammers), but there are exceptions(Gunners, Saints).

That’s all fine and dandy.
But aren’t there 3 sports teams that end in “gry”?

This subquestion was about teams whose geographic term was not the name of a city or state. So Arizona Cardinals and Florida Marlins are not answers. Otherwise there’d be others, such as Colorado Avalanche, California Angels, Texas Rangers, and New Jersey Nets.
