Which cars have lowest insurance rates?

I am looking to replace my 2018 Nissan Rogue SV that was in an accident. Somehow the damage went from “fender bender” to “we are just going to total it, sorry”. It looks like I am going to get between $22,000 and $25,000 from insurance (USAA) to replace it, and I am looking for a similar type SUV, so I would like to know where I can go to check out which vehicles have lower insurance rates overall. Also, is it true that certain car colors can raise your rates?

You can get insurance quotes for different cars from your insurer. Just ask (or go online) and get as many as you want for all the cars you are considering. That’s much more useful to you than any generic “lowest cost to insure” list would give you.

Insurance isn’t the only variable cost for cars though. Financing costs, depreciation, maintenance, repairs, and fuel economy all matter too. Edmunds produces estimates of total cost of ownership (which they call “True Cost to Own”) but I have no idea if their methodology is sound. It might get you started though.

Good luck!

That is all very well and good, but what I really want is what I asked for: A general list of insurance rates by vehicle, listed high to low or low to high, I don’t care. I just want to be able to do a quick scan to know what to avoid insurance-rate wise. With that Edmonds link I have to plug in each make and model one at a time.

Does this help?

Perfect. Thank you.

It’s interesting that the majority of the vehicles on the “cheapest to insure” list are CUVs similar to the OP’s Rogue (plus a few pickups and a minivan).

Just scanning the list it looks like as a general rule:
CUVs = generally cheap to insure.
Sedans = middle of the road
Luxury and sports cars = expensive to insure

I noticed that too. I also was surprised to see that a Ford F-150 (a big truck) is up there as one of the cheapest to insure.

I see that the Nissan Rogue is on the list, you should be able to get a new SV level version for just a couple of grand over what you are getting from your insurance. The new Rogue is better than the old one and has a new 1.5L turbo that gets good mileage. I just got a Platinum level one and love it.

The quotes on that list look very high to me and I live in Michigan which is know for high insurance and bad roads. Full coverage on my Rogue Platinum is $1150/year. But maybe the list is good as a general guide and YMMV.

Update: USAA gave me $25,100 for the 2018 Rogue SV I originally paid $17,500 for. I just drove home a 2020 Rogue SV I paid $22,000 for, and ordered a $1000 computer system that has a i5-12400F cpu, RTX 3050 gpu and a 1 tb ssd.

Sometimes, life is good.
