It’s driving me crazy. The announcers at the Masters keep talking about Phil Mickelson’s two driver strategy, but I’ve never heard anyone say which club he took out so he could add the extra driver. I can’t believe it’s his lob wedge. 2 iron maybe? Does anyone know?
From Masters.org Mickelson said he would take out one of his wedges and perhaps a low iron to allow him to carry two drivers.
The whole article is pretty interesting actually. One driver for a fade, the other for a draw. Never thought about something like that.

CMC fnord!
Emphasis added. I’m sure they meant “or”.
Phil used this strategy last week and won by something like 10 strokes (although the field wasn’t nearly as strong as what you’ll find at the Masters).
Real golfers know how to shape shots.
Yeah, that’s why he does it, but he has to pay a price by giving up one of his other clubs. The various wedges are used for your short game, which is usually the most important part from a scoring standpoint, so he has to compromise that to gain the shot shaping advantage. If he wins tomorrow, we might see a lot of golfers adopting this strategy!
Na, I’m sure he was thinking about adding a third driver, one for the straight shots!
He said in the post game Q&A that he took his pitching wedge out.
He still has his gap wedge and lob wedge.
His decision will probably change from course to course. He apparently feels if he plays the way he expects, there isn’t a pitching wedge shot on the new Agusta.
Besides, he can do nearly anything he wants with the other two wedges.
- Why yes, I am a Mickleson fan. How did you know?
So if he’s playing in Scotland, he’d keep the sand wedge in… Seems to me like a brilliant strategy – anybody else try this before?
Not becessarily. I think a lot of the pros use their lob wedges for sand shots, especially the ones with steep walls. I’m assuming you’re referring to pot bunkers in Scotland.
Hey, what do I know – I’ve got a niblick in my bag…
If it was me, I’d take out my putter. Since I’ll never hit the green anyway …
I would have taken out the mashie. You so seldom encounter potatoes on the links these days.
