Which direction do you hang clothes in your closet?

The closet I’m currently using I approach from it’s right so the clothes are hung facing my left, hooks towards the back. In my last place it was the same. The place before that I approached from the closet’s right, so all clothes faced my right, hooks towards the back. From left to right were casual clothes (tops then pants) then work clothes (shirts then trousers). Sunglasses are in a row on the dresser, all facing out. I’m right handed and my OCD has been mentioned on occasion.

Ok, now you got me curious, (goes and counts shirts), about half are to the left. Most of my hangers have swivel hooks. I could choose one way over another. I just put them on the hanger and clip them in place.

I have taught myself to be amidexterous. Spelling? It was some work, but I can catch and throw a ball with either hand. I can swing an axe with either hand, I bowl either way. I was originally left handed, but getting my hand smacked with a ruler in Grade one for that, taught me to write right handed. It is now natural feeling to write with my right hand.

My husband has them all facing right and then he puts his finger between the hooks so they are equally spaced. (Drives me nuts)

The vast majority of my clothes is whatever way it faces when the hangar goes in. Only my suits and sport coats have any uniformity: they face right, I’m right handed.

I’m right handed, and I face my clothes to the right. The way I look at it, it makes things easier to take the shirt out out of the closet with my left hand, leaving my right hand free to undo the top button to remove it from the hangar. Or maybe it’s that I hold the hangar with my left hand, and slide the shirt on and button it with my right. I’m not sure which came first.

But the key is that shirt-unbuttoning is easier with my dominant hand.

You really would need to ask my my dry cleaners if you are looking for any kind of meaning behind which way my clothes face. They always put the shirts on the hanger facing the same way, so that is how they go in the closet. Hooks facing away from me, all face left.

Don’t know whether my dry cleaner is left handed or not.

 I prefer all of the hangers to be spaced evenly as well, but it’s so the clothes can hang without being caught on each other so less risk of creasing.

I know that I developed a preference for hanging my clothes facing right (despite being right handed) because all the closets in my life have been really close to a lefthand wall. If I wanted to step or peer to the side in order to see what t-shirt was what better, I preferred to lean into open air rather than closer to a wall. I spread the clothes open with my right hand to see them, then pull the one I want out with my left hand.

And yes, all hooks face away from me and all shirts need to go in the same direction so I can quickly flip through. My husband was a bit baffled by this and after one mishap with half the shirts backwards I just always do it myself and don’t bother him about it.
