Simple question: which direction do you hang clothes in your closet?
Staring into my closet randomly, it occurred to me that everyone seems to hang shirts with the front part of the shirt facing the left side of the closet. At least, I don’t recall ever seeing a closet (my own, someone else’s, in a movie, etc.) where the shirts in it didn’t face this way. But surely somebody must hang them the other way (ie with the front part of the shirt facing the right side of the closet)?
I wondered if perhaps this is a right-hander thing to do - since most people are right handed and most people probably use their dominant hand to take a shirt out of the closet, it makes sense to face the shirt so you’re looking at the front of the shirt after you retrieve it. Ergo, a left hander would probably face the shirts in the opposite direction (facing the right side of the closet) so they would be looking at the front of the shirt when they retrieve it with their left hand. That’s my theory, anyway.
So please help me solve this profound mystery of the universe. I’ve said shirts to make it simple but the same question applies to blouses, jeans, suits, and any other article of clothing you may hang in your closet or wardrobe. I’m also really interested to know if anyone does something totally different with their clothes - do you hang half your clothes in one direction, half in the other, so they meet in the middle? Alternate? Really don’t care and hang them any which one you feel like it? Only hang certain articles of clothing one way and other items totally differently?
Fronts of my shirts and jackets all face left and I’m right-handed. Jeans hang over the hangers with the legs to the right. That’s the way I’ve always put my clothes on hangers. I don’t know if it’s OCD or merely a habit.
And just because you didn’t ask - my closet is 2-tiered - shirts hung above, pants below, with a small section for the couple of dresses that need full-length to hang. It’s much better use of a 70s-vintage 5’ wide closet. I do so miss my walk-in…
I hang them facing to the right when fresh from the laundry (and I’m right-handed). If I’ve worn them once, but not stunk them up too badly, I hang them facing to the left so I won’t wear them again to an important function, but may wear them again for hanging around the house.
Depends on which end of the closet: I want the fronts of shirts, jackets, bathrobes, etc. facing towards the middle of the closet, since that’s where I’ll be standing in front of. Jackets, and dress shirts go on the right, so they face left. Bathrobes, flannel shirts, etc. go on the left, so they face right. Slacks go in the middle.
One for all the t-shirts I currently wear when going out.
Another for all the t-shirts I wear while at home.
Another for all the t-shirts that no longer fit, but might again someday.
Another for everything else (suit, tux, regular shirts, etc.)
I actually have 5 closets. There’s a cedar closet in the attic that holds really good stuff that I never wear.
Everything in all closets faces to the right, and I’m right-handed.
Oh, and in each closet, the most recently-cleaned clothing is on the left.
Whoever built our house put two parallel rods in the master bedroom’s closet. They hang from the back of the closet to the front. My clothes are on the left rod, facing forward. My husband’s are on the right rod, also facing forward. FWIW, I’m a righty, he’s a lefty.
I actually wasn’t conscious of ever deciding this, and had to look in two closets for my answer. With a single shirt exception, all other coats, shirts and a sweatshirt are: front facing the right for this righty. ( it wasn’t asked, but the hooks also all face away from me. )
The way the shirts get hung is random. I don’t pay any attention to which way they face so some face one way and some face the other for absolutely no reason.
Me, too, except that I think it depends on which hand I reach for the hangar with. The shirt will go on the hangar one way or the other depending on which hand each is in, but the hangar goes on the rod “from the front”. About 2/3 of the shirts are facing right, which corresponds to my grabbing the hangar with my right hand (I’m right-handed).
I don’t hang much stuff up, because there’s no closet in my bedroom. The things that do hang usually end up either way depending on what direction the hook on the hanger was facing when I picked it up to put the garment on it. If I get serious about hanging things up, then front faces left (and I’m left-handed). But most of the time, whatever gets it on the hanger and into the closet fastest is what I do.
