Which Doper is most like The Cecil?

[For the purposes of this thread, let’s assume Cecil is a Real Live Human Being.]

There sure are a lot of smart fellers and ladies here. Lotta funny ones, too. Put 'em together, and you’ve got smart asses!

But seriously, folks. According to what you’ve seen on here, which Doper comes closest to Cecil?

This Doper probably should possess one or more of the following characteristics:

  1. Smart. Both book-smart and experience (or is that a priori and empirical? I can never remember which is which).

  2. Witty, in a sarcastic way.

  3. Master or Mistress of the putdown.

  4. Maintains a holier-than-thou attitude at all times. In other words, acts like he or she knows.

Hm, interesting characteristics all.

I guess it’d be tough for anyone to have all four of those (and of course numbers 2 and 3 are very similar).

But who on here can come close? :wink:

Cecil Adams himself has posted on this board, so, using the standard that “A is A”, that would seem to make him the most Cecil-like. As noted, Ed Zotti, Cecil’s current (third) editor also posts here, and even Mike Lenehan, Cecil’s original editor back in 1973, has made a few posts.

My first thought was Fenris but…haven’t seen any posts from him for a while.

Since it’s near impossible for people to be smarmy or snotty on here without being jumped on for it, that might leave us with people who appear to be Quite Smart and people who appear to be Quite Witty.

I still think tomndebb fits this, as does Fenris.

Thus, everybody EXCEPT YOU, is actually Cecil.

I’m going to agree with Cecil…er…dantheman on this one. tomndebb is the name that immediately popped into my head (mostly based on what I’ve read on the fathom boards). I’d also add Fenris and SPOOFE, even if the latter fellow did lose his Bo Diddley.

tomndebb is like Cecil? No way! Don’t get me wrong, tomndebb is one of my favorite posters, but his style is nothing like Cecil’s. Tom is very professorial, and Cecil is more like the smart assed kid in his class.

Aside from that, there are similarities - both do present plenty of evidence for their opinions/views (of course, maybe The Cecil has others research his stuff, I dunno), for example.

Knowledge-wise, the first poster that comes to mind is tomndebb.

Attitude-wise, Alphagene comes to mind. He still hanging out here?

If we’re going with a combination of transcendent knowledge and ferocious attitude, I’m gonna have to go with Cervaise. Brilliant stuff.
