I’m about 40 miles west of the spot in Leake County which is the center of Mississippi.
We are pretty much the same distance. I am also about 28 miles from the center. My niece would be about 1 mile, but she does not Dope. Oy! lives in Trenton though, so neither of us are the closest.
Jim
The Wikipedia link says the center is 13 miles southeast of Columbia. I live in Columbia on the east side, so I’d say maybe 10 miles.
Based on the number of us so far who are near the centers of our respective territories (30 miles or less), maybe we should brand ourselves Centrists and see if the Fringe Dwellers (anybody living more than 100 miles from State Center) want to claim part of this thread, too. Or maybe somebody can start such a thread for that group.
I’m 43 miles according to google maps. I’m going to have to go by there some time. I’m in Maryland.
According to Yahoo maps, I am about 110 miles form the sign in Spit’s post. I’m surprised it was not closer.
Quit trying to cheat! Albany is 120 driving miles from Wampsville (103 straight line). I’m only 117 driving miles (96 straight line).
Within the precision of this thing, I am sure that I could walk to the geographic center within an hour, tops. Likely a half hour. Could be in my swimming pool, for all I know. All I know is that if I drive 5 miles NW from where I am, I’m in the middle of Trenton.
Gotta find a more accurate tool.
Albany looks like the center of NY only if you ignore the entire western portion of the state.
I live in said western portion, only 60 miles from Wampsville. Driving it’s about 85 miles if you stick to the interstates, 75 miles if you use rural roads.
Boise is in the southwestern part of Idaho, which is about 190 highway miles from Challis, the closest town to Idaho’s geographical center.
Orlando sure looks like the center of Florida–if you forget [del]Lower Alabama[/del] the Panhandle.
But I wonder what the “weighted center” of NYS would be, i.e. you’d count the Adirondacks, and Downstate, and Chautauqua, a bit less because they are so narrow relative to the rest of the state. It’d prolly be between Utica and Schenectady.
Dagnabbit! I’m in Columbia, 49 miles from the 'Boro. I did spend 10 summers in Brady, TX growing up though. That’s pretty close.
Santa Fe is about 95 miles from the geographic center of NM.
I live 20 miles south of the exact center of California, so claims their webpage.
I live less than 5 miles from the geographic center of Tennessee.
The city used to be the State Capital. About 175 years ago.
Our newspaper is knincknamed The Daily Snooze Journal,
Our University, MTSU, is knicknamed Apathy U.
It’s that kinda burg.
<yawn>
I don’t know aboout geographical center, but in two weeks I’ll be living at the mean center of the US population
I live approximately 271 miles from Nevada’s geographical center. That is straight line on a map.
It is approximately 339 miles by road.
It appears, by Google Earth, that I live approximately 13.5 miles from Maryland’s state center.
Zeldar, you must live pretty close to me…25 miles from the 'Boro
Well, in that case, “Hi, Neighbor!”
