Which dystopian *movie* do you feel the US is headed for?

The Mist

When the shit hits the fan, the religious fanatics will sacrifice the “non-believers” while the big monsters sneak in and finish everyone off.

“It’s all very psychiatric.”

Well, we already saw what happened when the shit hit the fanatics: they cooed and begged for more.

Brazil The bureaucracy will gradually become as absurd as our politics.

I must say, you’ve hit that one out of the park.

Bumping this thread, because, well, this week has called for it.

Back in the dark days leading up to the 2020 election (oh how innocent) I picked “V for Vendetta” (movie version) for the post-plague, quasi-Christian fascist future. Now that we’ve moving forward with Trump 2.0, I have to once again decide which mirror best reflects the next administration.

This time, I’ve elected “Running Man” - because the justice system is blatantly for sale, the government blames everything on “those people” whether it be the ones they frame for their own misdoings or the “resistance” that requires such. Little things like the “right to a trial” are prizes to be one with life threatening risks, long since purged for those lacking power and influence. The key to reaching the president? Calling their agent, because life is a reality TV show.

And all the while, the audience and most of the world laughs and watches with glee.

Once again, the difference is that A) we aren’t going to have the protagonist save us from ourselves and B) even if you show the whole world the Truth, they’d rather believe the lies.

A mix of Children of Men and Idiocracy eventually leading to Waterworld.

A crossover between The Handmaid’s Tale and 1984, followed by the future scenes in The Terminator except with right wing fanatics instead of robots.

I’d pick Idiocracy as closest to my own theory of the national ills that brought about the results of this current election. But that’s only because the prescient sci-fi story by Cyril M. Kornbluth, The Marching Morons, was never made into a movie. Neither has The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, but maybe Downfall (Der Untergang) suits the purpose.

Rollerball. Corporations and the billionaires that run them are the ones who control every aspect of your life, and the media is all a show to keep people docile and complacent.

The Handmaid’s Tale. That’s what Project 2025 is all about. Men know best, and women know least, and impregnating fertile women is necessary, whether they want to be impregnated or not. If they don’t want to be impregnated, tough, they’re carrying to term. Who cares what they think; they’re too dumb to think, and if by chance, they do come to a logical conclusion, it can be dismissed.

Welcome to Gilead.

I stand by what I said 4 years ago about Idiocracy.

“How to Blow Up a Pipeline”

Wiki lists THE TERMINATOR as a dystopian film, so: figure things are unfolding as they should, and on track to be as good as can be hoped in 2029 after a valuable lesson is learned — with people working together to make the world in general, and America in particular, a better place?

I may be doing this wrong.

Depending on how far Trump tries to go, and how much opponents try to push back, I’d say that Civil War isn’t out of the question.

Metropolis.

All of them.
It will be a collage.

Back to the Future Part II, the part set in the present day, after Biff steals the sports trivia book.

President Trump and Speaker McFly.
