Which edition of The Lord of the Rings trilogy do I want?

I know I don’t want/need the theatrical version. I’ve rented the director’s cut/extended edition with the extra scenes and the commentaries, and that’s what I want. But if I look at Amazon, my options include:

The Lord of the Rings - The Motion Picture Trilogy (Widescreen Edition)

The Lord of the Rings - The Motion Picture Trilogy (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition)

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Theatrical and Extended Limited Edition) (Does this mean you can watch either version on the same discs, or that there are two sets of discs? "Cause I don’t want the theatrical.)

And then the same for each title (I will most likely end up buying each title separately for cost reasons.)

The Extended Edition would already be in widescreen, right? What does Platinum Series mean?

Thanks in advance for your help.

If you are unable to cope with owning a set of the theatrical releases even if you never watch them, then you want the second one: The Lord of the Rings - The Motion Picture Trilogy (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition). “Platinum Series” is New Line’s tag for their premium releases with lots of extra materials and stuff.

The Platinum series is what you want, it’s not the theatrical series. You get extended scenes with or without commentary, and you get the discs with all the Behind the Scenes stuff…I love watching those, it really gives a nice spherical view of the films.

The previous posters are right about which edition you should get, given what it is you want.

(But the theatrical releases were better…)

Okay, I’m looking at these more carefully…“widescreen” does not equal “extended”…

okay, “Platinum” it is, then! Thanks for your help!

a35362, I just bought the Platinum version and it is phenomenal. Such a gorgeous set with beautiful packaging and jam-packed with goodies. And it was only $36 at one of Amazon’s marketplace stores, used and in great shape.

I wasn’t even aware that they put out a full-screen (pan & scan) version of these DVDs.

Yeah, can you imagine? I don’t ever even consider fullscreen for any movie any more.
