This thread about Dolly Parton’s birthday made me wonder which famous people’s birthdays you celebrate.
Ever since I was in middle school, I always liked watching Dan Rather on the CBS News. I found a list of birthdays in the World Almanac, and found out that he was born on Halloween! October 31 is now almost like a double holiday for me.
More recently, as I’ve become a fan of singer Ke$ha, I learned that her birthday is March 1. Last year was the first year I was aware of her birthday. This year, I’ll probably celebrate by having some beer on the train with my co-workers after work. (We often do this even when it’s not Kesha’s birthday.) We may even leave work a little early to drink at a bar before we buy our train beers. (We also do this every once in a while, even when it’s not Kesha’s birthday.)
Celebrating famous person’s birthday?
Short answer: None.
I don’t even particularly like celebrating my own!
However, whenever I am reminded on December 8th that John Lennon died that day, I do get a bit depressed and it still sort of hits me in a very sad way all over again.
I imagine famous people celebrate their own birthdays, and probably in a more spectacular fashion than I could ever do; they most likely have about 100x more friends than I do. I can’t see why I need to contribute remotely.
I barely pay attention to my own birthday, and even my family’s birthdays, let alone someone’s I have never met.
Well, yeah. Though celebrity b’days might be a good excuse for a party. Cary Grant: watch his best movies. Guy Fieri: go eat at the diner. and so on…For Trent Reznor’s birthday one year we made a cake, frosted it in navy blue, and cut out “NIN” in stiff white frosting to decorate. I have a picture somewhere, of the cake, a navy blue candle, and magazine photo of Trent. That was fun! a fun thing to do when you have a kid (though mine rolled her eyes when she saw it. We ate it to the sweet sounds of 'Head Like A Hole"!)
I’ll frequently do something in honour of Tolkien’s birthday- we joke that my cousin got married on September 22nd as it was the only way me and my Dad would remember the date…
