“Peace Train” – because great music knows no genres.
It being an objective fact that Dolly Parton is among the ten greatest Americans yet born (the only subjective matter being where exactly in the Top 10 she belongs), I wish to wish her a happy 66th birthday in case she peeks in.
So what is one of your favorite Dolly recordings or songs?
I’ll start with a late one:
Dolly sings her biggest hit to the man she wrote it for, Porter Wagoner. (For those who don’t know the story, Porter gave Dolly her big break by casting her on his show and singing several hit duets with her; she quickly became the much bigger star, wanted to leave, they had a bitter breakup with many lawsuits and did not speak for years, but reconciled in his later years, so I Will Always Love You was not altogether worshipful but a “I’ll always love ya… now bye bye!”).
The Elvis connection to the song is much discussed so I won’t mention it here.
Another fave:
Dolly’s cover of Me and Bobby McGee, which I prefer to Janis Joplin’s.
Do you have a favorite Dolly number?
And if not, are you prepared to come forward and accept Dolly as your personal goddess and diva?
I don’t like country music as a general rule. But I do love Dolly, especially as Miss Mona. She has a lovely sweet voice, and she seems to be a lovely sweet person.
I can’t say I have a favorite Dolly Parton song/performance, but I AM delighted to see Sampiro back in action on the Dope.
P.S. I will lift a glass to Ms. Parton’s natal celebration today.
Dude, you’re BACK!!!
I feel about Dolly the same way Johnny Carson did.
Sure, everyone’s all giddy about Sampiro being back, but who started the first DP thread, huh?
Merged duplicate threads.
if that worked when you posted it, it lasted all of 7 minutes before the copyright owner objected and yanked it.
If this is the video you are referring to, perhaps it will last a little longer.
My sister and I wore out her Dolly Parton album when we were little - Here You Come Again. We acted out the song “Me and Little Andy”, “Two Doors Down”…
But my current two favourites are “9 to 5” and “Coat of Many Colors”
My favorite Dolly Parton number is 55378008. Wait … you meant my favorite song that she sings? I dunno.
Happy Birthday Dolly - and I far prefer your original version of “I Will Always Love You”! (And I cannot stand the Whitney screeching version - like fingernails on a blackboard to me!)
Speaking of which - back in the day when I lived in West Hollywood (Gay Mecca), it seemed to be common knowledge that Dolly was living in the West Hollywood area with a woman and they were more than “just friends”. Yes, I know she has been married to the same man for ages, but they also freely admit they don’t see each other that often either. Not that it matters, and yes there was certainly quite the little rumor mill in West Hollywood that was often not accurate, but it was never a big deal - just sort of considered “fact” back then.
Happy birthday, Miss Dolly!
Coat of Many Colors and PMS Blues are two of my favorites, but I’ll listen to anything sung by her.
You listened to it? All I have to do is think about it and my allergies kick in.
Jolene. A surprisingly effective cover. The greatest, and cutest, supergroup.
Plus the others.
I accepted Dolly as my personal goddess and diva (also guardian movie star per Designing Women) back in 1975. As I drove to a scholarship competition, “9 to 5” was playing on the radio. I won the competition, and have considered Dolly and that song to be personal good luck charms ever since.
Here’s Dolly’s recent interview on The Colbert Report and their wonderful duet of “Love Is Like a Butterfly”.
Happy Birthday, Dolly!
One of my favorite performers ever.Happy Birthday Dolly!
My dog is named after Dolly Parton. She’s a light-colored golden retriever and when she was a baby she’d “sing” when she yawned. She (the dog) honest-to-god grew up to be rather large-chested and small-waisted. She’s adorable just like Dolly P
“Life is as peaceful as a baby’s sigh.” One of the most evocative lines ever.
If I’m not mistaken, yesterday Janis Joplin was 70. *
She’s in the top 10.
*If she had lived.
I am pretty sure I would have never, ever in a million years run across this. I love LBM and Dolly, so I am so glad you posted this!
Isn’t it a great performance? Glad you liked it!
