…when typing? a friend and i are having a debate and are, perhaps, to lazy to count how many times we use each finger during our conversation. are there any statistics that discuss this? has the SD[MB] gone over this issue before?
and get your mind out of the gutter.
This site ( http://calstaging.bemidjistate.edu/en3930/landar/howto.html ) says the first fingers cover 46% of the alphabetic keys.
Off the top of my own head… the most frequently used letters in English, well known to media types off the Linotype machines, are:
E T A O I N S H R D L U.
let’s see:
E: left hand 2nd finger (L2 for short)
T: L1
A: L4
O: R3
I: R2
N: R1
S: L3
H: R1
R: L1
D: L2
L: R3
U: R1
I think from that it’s fair to say that it’s the first fingers, especially when you bear in mind that the first fingers cover six letters (if I type properly…) as against three for most of the others.
Depends if you consider the thumbs fingers or not. The space bar is used more than any other key on the keyboard–at least once per word.
I’d say my pinkies do, because they are the ones that have to reach WAAAAYYYYY over to hit the (big, heavier keys) TAB, SHIFT, ENTER/RETURN and BACKSPACE.
