Which Hedwig & Angry Inch Soundtrack?

Okay.

Just saw the movie. Enjoyed it very much (homoeroticism, punk rock and cold war politics, what’s not to like  ) but the darned songs are trapped in my head like rabid weasels orbiting my skull.

To exorcise them I think I must buy the soundtrack, BUT: which one?

Broadway or movie? I know that theatre soundtracks will generally differ quite a bit from film ones…I am a bit concerned that if the theatre one (which I suspect would be “artistically better”) is quite different from the film tunes in my head, the aural dissonance will just be too extreme and make a miserable experience :frowning:

Any Hedwig Doper Fans out there? Whadyer think?

Movie.

The theatrical score is rawer, more punk, and sounds a lot rougher, plus it has one song (“Random Number Generator”) that is heard only as background music in the movie. I prefer the movie soundtrack because it has superior production values and you can hear the vocals AND the backing track, which is not IMO true of the theatrical CD. In addition, there are some 4 or 5 extra songs on the movie CD that are not on the theatrical CD.

I will avoid the snarky comment that there is only one “soundtrack” which is the movie soundtrack, and that the recording of the off-Broadway show is properly referred to as the “original cast recording.”

Oh wait, no I won’t. Sorry.

Anyways, I suggest since you saw the movie that you start with the movie soundtrack. If your lust for Hedwig tunes is not satisfied or if you’re interested in hearing the songs which didn’t make it into the movie or are just a completist, buy the OCR. The OCR is on my list of things to buy when I have money but since I just bought a new car and a new computer I have no money.

I have the movie soundtrack, and it’s fabulous. Haven’t heard the broadway version though. I didn’t even know there was a recording of it available.
