Only one piece of NFL paraphernalia has forced me to alter my rubric by which the annoyance factor of the others is judged to include not only its aesthetic unpleasantness and the obnoxiousness of the average wielder, but also the number of times I’ve been unintentionally thwapped upside the head with the fucking thing.
I have nothing against the Steelers — hell, I hope they do the AFC proud in the big one — but the Terrible Towel can suck it.

Cope’s towel idea was most likely derived from seeing other team’s fans wave things around. Miami Dolphin fans in the early 1970s during that team’s Super Bowl runs were famous for waving white hankies around. Up the road from Pittsburgh, the 1977-78 Cleveland Indians had a couple promotional giveaway days where they handed out “Hate the New York Yankees” hankies. When asked what he thought of it one of the Yankees - probably Graig Nettles or Sparky Lyle - laughingly said that he was against such promotions for sanitary reasons.

Yeah, I thought the Dolphins started it then the Steelers ripped it off, and of course assume that they invented it. Not that I care, as I probably dislike the Dolphins more than the Steelers.
I know, right? The Terrible Towel sucks so much, is sooo annoying that they straight copied it.
I haven’t noticed too many cheese heads this year. When you watch the game and get a good view of the crowd, blur your eyes up and see if the whole audience is yellow. That’s just too much yellow.
I don’t know that that’s a fair thing to say, because the company that makes the Terrible Towel is the same one now also making the Packer Titletown Towel. It’s just trying to work both sides of the street, which is the American way!
