I don’t know if I find one show more offensive than the other (keep in mind that I watch them both and find them funny), but one line that really stayed in my mind as shocking was on Family Guy. (scene may not be exactly as remembered) : The male newsreader was at a bar having a drink with someone else. They decided to have another and the newsreader made a comment along the lines of : I guess the wife will have another bruise/black eye to explain away tomorrow. I did actually find that offensive, although I laugh at most of the jokes on both shows.
People who don’t think this is offensive, why is it do you think that jokes like this don’t show up on Full House? Coincidence?
Because Full House sucks.
I don’t really find Family Guy offensive. I think it makes more fun of Peter than any groups of people.
Having said that, there are two times that the show disturbed me.
One was when it depicted Walt Disney drawing Minnie Mouse and forcing her to take off her clothes. The other time was the episode with Death where it implies necrophilia.
I don’t know about anyone else, but I can’t. I’d only find these shows offensive if I thought they meant the outrageous things they present to be taken seriously. They clearly don’t, so it’s funny instead.
Now Full House, on the other hand: that was offensive.
Saying “it doesn’t offend me” or “I don’t think it’s offensive” doesn’t mean I think nobody else could be offended by it.
Supposedly this is a parody of another movie scene (I can’t recall which one)
That was one of the most disturbing things I ever saw on the show. Another was during a Brady Bunch parody, when Cindy says “I don’t mean to tattle, but is Bobby really a doctor?”
I didn’t get it at first, but then… ::shudder::
South Park’s humor is straight-forward vulgar and seem to focus on one big offensive issue throughout the show, while Family Guy is a bit more complex and it pokes at many issues each episode. I find both funny but Family Guy really catches me off guard on half of their jokes.
I didn’t catch that one, but I’ll definately be looking for it. That also reminds me of some of the Quagmire jokes, like when he finds a tied up teenage girl and says, "Jackpot!’
Also, you don’t happen to do Toad by any chance, Lando?
For me, I find them offensive… but funny! I can’t help but laugh. It’ s sort of a guilty pleasure. Then there are the episodes where I know I should be offended, but I’m not.
South Park has Jesus as a character, and a not-so-perfect character as well. Then, they killed him off.
I’d say this gives SP the edge.
I don’t see anything offensive about the examples here. I mean, even the “anti-semitic” jokes (in quotes because I don’t see them as anti-semitic) are usually spoken by characters that are understood by the audience to be idiots. When Cartman makes a joke about Kyle’s Judaism, it’s emphasising how much of an arsehole Cartman is.
Anyone who thinks that either of these shows are offensive should check out some Stormfront cartoons or something.
Okay, fair enough. What you said though - “what exactly IS offensive here?.. I don’t see what’s so offensive about some of these things here.” - made it seem like you didn’t understand where people were coming from.
I thought the OP was asking about which show most people would find offensive, so that’s why I answered like I did. If it’s asking which one we personally find more offensive… well… I guess I’d give the same answer.
Yeah, both shows have characters or situations that are potentially offensive to particular groups of people (e.g. in South Park, Cartman’s liberal use of the word “Jew” or some of the Jewish stereotypes used in Kyle’s family, or in Family Guy the suggestion of sticking a gas station nozzle up a horse’s ass). Heck, in some cases, entire episodes are offensive (think the “All About the Mormons” episode of South Park, or “When you wish upon a weinstein” for FG).
Do either of these shows offend me? Of course not, but i recognize that the things they’re saying are definitely not politically correct, and could be offensive to some – that’s exactly what makes them funny. I think the shows wouldn’t be nearly as funny if they didn’t cross that line and dare to offend people. Then again, I like edgy humor.
To call one show more offensive than the other is a bit vague, since it really depends on what you consider offensive, and in many cases what ethnic or religious group you may/may not be part of. I think South Park is much heavier on Jewish jokes (on average) than Family Guy is. Also, South Park has 4 more seasons worth of material to consider, which effectively lets it offend a much greater portion of the population than TFG.
As for my own “most offensive” votes? I’d have to say that the most offensive thing i’ve ever seen on South Park was Christopher Reeve cracking open the neck of a fetus and sucking out the stem cells. My roommate at the time and I were not only stunned, but laughing hysterically for at least five minutes after seeing that. In the Family Guy, I have too many favorite moments to pick a definite favorite, but i’d have to say that just about any 30 second section of the “Weinstein” episode would do.
