I’m considering buying a laser printer. Since I’m working as a translator I need to print out large quantities of bumph, and my little bubblejet is about ready to give up the ghost. I’m looking for something black and white, reasonably priced, and reliable, that won’t cost a king’s ransom for toner. Any good experiences?
I’ve had pretty good success with HP Laserjet 1012’s at work. Cheap, reliable as hell and fast. Here’s a link. Toner’s $70 a crack, so it comes down to…3.5 cents per page, not counting paper cost. Not bad.
HP has them listed as $200, but they can be found cheaper elsewhere, I think. Same goes for toner.
I’ve been running my bottom-rung HP (Laserjet 1005) for well over a years, and having printed several thousand sheets I still haven’t used up the toner supplied with it. It’s pretty fast, apart from the first sheet, and has caused me no problems. The only criticism is the paper guides need to be set up carefully, otherwise it doesn’t feed perfectly square.
How many pages of “bumph” (Care to translate that for us?) are you cranking out? The printer **slortar ** linked to is only good for 5,000 pages a month, or ten reams of paper. It also only holds 150 sheets of paper at a time.
Try looking for a used LaserJet 4000- or 4100-series printer. These are workgroup workhorses that are getting near the end of their corporate depreciation lives. Businesses dump them and buy something new to keep their capital equipment budgets alive, but they’re still fine printers. These typically come with two trays that hold 250 sheets each, and are often set up with duplexers so you can print on both sides. “Duty cycle” on these is closer to 150,000 pages a month.
Oops… forgot to say that while the toner for the 4000-series printers may cost $120 or each, they’re good for thousands and thousands of pages - somewhere around 10,000 normal text pages.
Pretty much the same economics as inkjets - the more expensive printer takes more expensive ink/toner, but is more frugal with the ink in the long run.
“Bumph” is paperwork. I doubt I’ll be printing out so much that I need a business-class printer, though.
Any further ideas?
Arighty. I went ahead and got the Laserjet 1012 at the Boxing Day sale at Futureshop. $Cdn 310 all told, including USB cable (not included), 3-year warranty, and taxes.
