Which national fast-food chain has the best basic hamburger?

That looks like a fly sandwich.
mmm

Huh, you learn something new every day! I’m still not sure I’d want to eat one without any specific toppings, though.

I’ve always LOVED McDonald’s basic hamburgers. I order them often still.

Not sure how I’d vote here- who eats the regular hamburger at any of these? At McDonald’s I’d gladly take a quarter pounder over a hamburger, at Wendy’s a single over a hamburger, and at BK a whopper over a hamburger.

Of the food I’d actually order at any of these, a BK Double Whopper is my choice.

Aside from my preference among those listed being A&W, I fully concur.

I was thinking it looked like a pile of raisins on a bun.

I voted for BK as we don’t have a Sonic, Jack in the Box, Wendy’s or A&W around here and I haven’t had a Dairy Queen or Hardees burger in a long time.

Thats the first thing that came to my kind as well…

In fairness to Maid Rite, perhaps I shouldn’t have pulled the first picture I found. Here’s a more flattering one, but, same idea.

Maid Rite are good sandwiches, but they aren’t hamburgers. They aren’t in SoCal, so I have to make my own every now and then just for the experience.

Yet another vote for Rally’s. They’re also cheaper than most other fast food, and have great fries to boot. What more can you ask for?

In Canada it’s Harvey’s. It’s not even a close call; they simply make a higher quality of hamburger patty, better even than In & Out.

However, of the choices offered, I’d pick A&W first, Wendy’s second. My fast food visits are down to once a month or so, and I will not waste my treat on any other kind.

The votes for Burger King baffle me, but again it might be a Canadian thing. In Canada, Burger King food is really awful, absolutely disgraceful crap. Perhaps it’s better in the USA; I’ve never eaten in a Burger King there. The Canadian version of a fast food chain is not always quite the same as the American.

Five Guys is over-priced crap, only partially redeemed by the free peanuts.

'course I live in a state with In-n-Out, which handily kicks Five Guys in all 5 of their asses.

With that said, Shake Shack is still the king. I can only dream they’ll go national some day…

Agreed, BK is nasty. Soggy buns that fall apart and I don’t even want to know where they get their tomatoes from…

I saw a Five Guys booth at our town art festival, and they kind of turned me off. Then we were near one when it was time for lunch, and decided to give it a try, and it was outstanding. Now the awesome fries helped too. Miles above In’n’Out.

Of the ones posted, I chose Wendy’s. We go to A&W, but for root beer floats - the burgers are tolerable, but nothing wonderful.

I’m surprised Rally’s got left off the poll.

Wow people on the Dope sure seem to like Wendys.

I chose Wendy’s. I once like BK but they seem to always have them precooked and sitting in a warmer oven these days. Nasty.

I also like the basic McD burger. It has its own taste that I love, not really a burger, perhaps, but a good combination of flavors.

Rally’s isn’t national either:

BK burgers taste to me like they’ve been sprayed with lighter fluid.

That website is insanely out of date-- They list one near my mom’s house that’s been closed for at least 15 years. And for some reason they all say “Subway at…”, and there’s not a Subway (in either sense of the term) there either. I don’t know if there are any open ones they missed, though.

Jesus, that’s horrifying. What happens if you don’t finish eating it before they start to hatch?

Ditto.

While I agree with you about BK, I do like ultra-thin burgers with caramelized, crispy edges. I don’t know about 1/8 of an inch thick, but when I make pan-fried fast-food style burgers, I smash them about 1/4-1/2 inch thick between a folded sheet of wax paper with a cast iron pan. It’s just another style of burger. I actually prefer it to the thicker, grilled, pub-style (1/2 pound & up) style of hamburger most of the time.
