Which one of these board memes annoys you the most?

It’s what one does to a Polaroid picture.

Or, it’s wood shingles.

Also the OP of this thread.

I can’t vote for the above, the meme that annoys me most is the stupid jokes about zombie threads. They aren’t funny and are quite asinine actually making the poster look like an dope instead of a doper.

Need Answer Fast.

I voted for “Regards, …”.

I read posts as verbal conversation, not as written essays, or personal letters. If anyone were to use “Regards, …” at the end of every spoken utterance, they would soon be shunned by society and live out their life on a remote outcropping wearing only animal furs and hay.

Irony, then, that I am too dense to perceive?

“Which of these is most threatening:
Pollution
War
Cancer
My Aunt Hildegard’s cocoanut biscuits.”

Something like that?

Hey, I like “cow-orkers”! Used it myself this week. You don’t see it as much any more.

Cow-orkers makes me stabby. Just sayin’.

I was thinking of the word “sammich” myself.

Expressing annoyance at innocent idiosyncrasies annoys me the most.

Eh, its often useful to point out that a thread is old before a bunch more people post on the mistaken assumption that its recent. But just saying that is kind of boring, so people make a zombie joke to indicate the same thing. It’s not exactly great comedy, but unlike most memes, it at least actually communicates something useful.

Its hardly unique to this Board, but I always get kind of annoyed by the “[hated installment of a popular movie franchise] doesn’t exist” meme. I’m not really sure why, actually. I guess maybe because doing it is so knee-jerk for some people when they’re particular hated movie (or book or whatever) comes up.

And I still think the Quarry thing is funny.

(and yea, the other things on the poll aren’t memes, which is itself kind of annoying)

Everytime I see the quarry line, all I can think of is Mean Girls. Which, I mean, is pretty great because I get to think of Mean Girls, Certified Great Movie™.

That “Regards …” schtick doesn’t as much annoy me, as it makes me think less of whoever puts it at the end of his message. It may be confirmation bias, but after 18 years of surfing the internet, I have found that undersigned forum posts are not worth reading. Their authors fall into the same category of those who refer to themselves in the third person, and those who preface their opinions with “I personally believe”.

You win the Golden Sombrero! Did not even notice that typo

Your entitled to your opinion, of course, especially in the IMHO forum, but the word “regards” is used as a general closing in all kinds of personal letters, and business letters, to express good wishes, even if the body of the letter isn’t complimentary or is a complaint. Except for the politically-correct, word-police, who are annoyed at the, dare-I-say-it, free speech of others, there really isn’t a good reason to ban it’s use, or demand it not be used. IMHO, of course.

It wouldn’t be annoying if I didn’t trip over the damned thing at the bottom of every f… post by that particular poster.

It doesn’t make me think less of the poster as such, but it is like having a conversation with someone who pokes me in the eye at end of every sentence. After a while I stop paying attention to whatever it is that they’re saying, because I’m too busy bracing myself. And then I overcome my desire to slap them, and leave the room. They may be the most brilliant, funny and wonderful people in the world, but I will never know.

I don’t mind the first two in the poll at all, since they’re not there in every f… oh, I think I’ve made my point.

I mean, at least put it in the signature field, would ya?

I suppose that we all have some annoying habits, though. Just today, I had someone sarcastically point out to me (or, well, it was in a YouTube video, but whatever) that if you put “arguably” in front of a sentence, it becomes true. And I realized that yeah, I do that. So now I’ll stop doing it.

Ok, let’s clarify something about memes.

The word was coined by one Richard Dawkins, and the definition of a meme, from the horse’s mouth, is that it is a packet of cultural information that behaves in an analogous way to genes in DNA, experiencing analogous pressures of “variation, mutation, competition, and inheritance” as genes do, each of which has an effect on the “reproductive success” of the meme.

A meme is not just a popular idea, catch-phrase, or some stupid picture of a demented cat with a semi-witty caption (those are indeed all memes.)

An unpopular idea is also a meme, just as you would not say that an unsuccessful gene is somehow not a gene due to its lack of success.

One then realizes that memes, just like genes, can be shitty, like junk DNA. They can be poorly adapted to spread successfully. They can be impoverished little bundles of uselessness, not long for this world. Their lack of success does not alter their status as memes.

Also something that does not determine what a meme is or isn’t: whether it irritates certain people.

What does determine the success of meme: whether people do things like talk about it. Complaining, in other words, helps to propagate the meme.

Please proceed with your regularly scheduled complaining.

So does that mean that the common misunderstanding of what a meme is, is a meme?

This isn’t about the specific word. Why would you think that? The poster in question could put “Screw you all, you toad-faced bunch of snotsuckers” at the bottom of every post, and it would still be annoying.

Well, less annoying. But still annoying.

That is so totally not the premise of it. We’re not always that advanced in our thinking around here.

From the official SDMB Glossary of Terms:

Someone made a typo, someone else thought it was funny (rightly or wrongly, probably wrongly). That’s all there is to it.

Why would I think that? Seriously? The first reason would be because the word “regards” was specifically mentioned in the poll. The second would be numerous thread responses specifically referring to the word “regards”, and it’s use.

The Moderator Speaks: 9.18%
Let’s go down to the quarry and throw stuff in there! 38.78%
Regards, S----- (Finish the name yourself) 34.69%
Shakes annoys me the most. 17.35%

I think it’s interesting that the 64 members (65.31%) who bothered to vote on this poll voted for something other than Regards, S----- (Finish the name yourself) as the most annoying meme.

Apparently, the use of the word “regards”, and it use, doesn’t seem to be much of a priority to the majority of posters.
