Which superhero flick will bomb the worst this year?

Which includes a significant number of character who aren’t Marvel’s. Because there are a number of them. To the point where Marvel’s version doesn’t even get the ‘Thor (Comics)’ page on Wikipedia as usually happens with the most popular character by a given name. (See DC’s Scarecrow, for instance.)

How many of those 10 million extra hits are about the Marvel character, and just failed to mention that? Probably a few.

But how many are about the DC version? Or Madsen’s Valhalla? Or the unrelated BC character? Or webcomic characters? Or the mythical version, and noting that there are a bunch of comic characters based on him (or simply having the same name)? Or, indeed, comic creators, fans, or stores with names or handles that include ‘Thor’?

I’m surprised the new X-Men are garnering so much hate. Are you guys not aware that there has been some version of the X-Men on TV in cartoon form on television continuously for at least 20 years? In fact according to my guide there are no less than two X-Men series running currently. By the way I love comic book movies but have never liked any of these characters. I might go see Cap and Thor because of the Avengers.

Yes, but the X-Men movie series has been downhill since X2, which is a shame because X2 is one of my favorite comic book movies. Although, I have seen the trailer now, and First Class does look like it could be very good. But it hasn’t had much marketing yet other than some really bad posters, and people may be burn out on the series by now.

Captain America versus Wolverine or Captain America versus Green Lantern?

Either way, I think Cap is more noteworthy because, as I said above, his death in the comics was national news. Would that happen for either Wolverine or GL? We can’t know for sure, but my guess is no.

Well, I didn’t know all that. Given the thrashing Thor took in 2 threads a month or two ago, I’m surprised GL is winning this poll. You would have thought they were talking about Masters of the Universe.

I see 'em all the time on the Net, actually…

Apparently the writers of the Green Lantern movie are working on a script for the Flash right now. So whether or not we see it probably depends on how GL does.

The fact that X3 and Wolverine were (apparently) awful (I haven’t seen Wolverine yet, so can’t comment on it), and First Class looks to be a continuity headache considering those prior four movies, AND uses one of the most hated characters from the comics (Azazel), it’s not at all surprising at all.

Do the Iron Man suits count?

Well, Green Lantern turned into a mass murderer and then sacrificed his own life to save the planet, what, 15 years ago now, and it didn’t really make any waves outside the comics world.

I just have a question or two about the parameters.

You all are betting on the domestic grosses of the films, right? America-side?

I saw where the bet ends in September. Since the three films named in the OP aren’t due to be released on the same day, how long after a film’s release will you allow? Seems that whichever film is released first has the best chance to gross the most, and the one released last is at a sizable disadvantage. Is it whichever has grossed the most after a 30-day period?

Does the bet end on September 1, or September 30? At 11:59pm? Which time zone?

I realize that I have no stake in the bet. But it seemed a little vague to me.

By September (beginning, middle, or end), the writing should clearly be on the wall as to which film did the worst. The law of diminishing returns being what they are, 6 weeks after Captain America is released, it should be clear what the trajectory of its BO is compared to the other two. If by that time it’s still too close to call, then I’m happy to wait it out to get an accurate final tally. But I seriously doubt it will come to that.

I think it is pretty clearly Thor. For a few reasons:

  1. It is the least accessible. He is the least “Superhero-ish” superhero of the the three.

  2. The trailer looks bad. Opinion, I know.

  3. Green Lantern will do better than you think because: a. Ryan Reynolds is a bigger star you are giving him credit for. b. It has whiz-bang FX which people love. c. While the mythology of the character is broad, it is pretty easy to market, “He’s a Space Cop.” Done. d. It is pretty clear they have copied the Iron Man formula which people loved.

  4. It is pretty clear Thor’s movie’s only reason for being is to set him up as a part of the Avengers film next year.

Worldwide, is another story (I am not sure how well Captain America will play overseas and Europe may be drawn to Thor) but, in the US I am pretty sure, Thor will do the worst of the three.

Initially I picked Green Lantern for biggest bomb, but having seen the more recent (and much better) trailer, I think I am changing my vote to Thor.

As to which comic character is best known, hey, Green Lantern got a name check in a pop song.

And speaking of comic book characters mentioned in pop songs, Captain Marvel is a franchise character no one has yet mentioned (though it’s hard to imagine a good film based on that character). I’d say Flash is the next character who’s due for some screen time.

enalzi:

Not to mention the finale of a movie franchise with the initials H.P.

Just posting to say that I agree with this. I’m not too picky about a firm end date. If the writing is on the wall we can call it fairly early; if it’s surprisingly close, we can wait a bit.

Harry Potter is a month after Green Lantern. It’s going to be fighting more with Captain America.

Thor gets namechecked regularly on a popular, contemporary network television show.

I gotta admit, that trailer looked much better than I would have thought possible.

Super with Rainn Wilson?

Well. Honestly, I have little hope for the Marvel & DC flicks.
