Anyone excited for "Green Lantern"?

Disclaimer: I have a bet with another Doper about this film, and so have a vested interest in it doing poorly.

The top Google suggestions for “green lantern looks” are:
terrible
awful
bad
awesome
stupid
good

2/3 are negative, and the top three are all negative. However, this is hardly a perfect oracle. And some of the negative results are older stories about the first trailer for the film, which the filmmakers themselves more or less admitted sucked. So I think this film appears to be getting negative buzz around the Internet, but I admit this doesn’t really mean much on its own.

Far more important is the fact that the movie comes out on the 17th, but reviews have been embargoed until the 16th! That cannot be a good sign.

Are you excited for this movie? Do you think other people are excited for this movie? What buzz have you heard?

I’m excited and will definitely be going this weekend.

I’m cautiously optimistic, but expect to be disappointed.

A review embargo is a *very *bad sign. I can’t think of a single film that did that that was any good.

I thought all or most films had review embargos. They are showing it to critics, it’s just that most of the critics can’t write about it yet. I’m always reading bitchings from critics/bloggers about other critics/bloggers who broke an embargo.

The bad sign is if the studio doesn’t show a film for critics, and that’s not the case here.
Edit to add, I’m looking forward to it just because I like Ryan Reynolds, and I’m curious as to how he does.

A review embargo isn’t necessarily a bad sign, but it can be a troublesome one.

When they don’t do reviewer screenings at all, that’s a bad sign. The only reason to do that is to prevent reviews from coming out until weekend audiences have been duped by the marketing.

I think this movie looks like the lamest thing since Green Arrow. I never really liked Green Lantern, but the commercials make it look even dumber than I expected (especially that stupid poem he quotes). So no, I won’t be seeing it.

(I think I have a thing against green superheroes :D)

ETA: I hope I’m wrong and the folks who are looking forward to it have a great time.

They made a Green Arrow movie!? When was this?

Or do you mean Green Hornet?

The stupid poem is pretty much required. Skipping that would be like making a Captain America movie in which no Nazis were punched.

D’oh! Sorry. So many Green guys! Yeah, I meant Green Hornet.

Or Superman movie where he doesn’t fly and fights a giant spider.

It’s going to be tough, as the first trailer (and therefore first impression) was the movie is being played for laughs.

Could have been worse. Could have been Jack Black’s version.

A review embargo that expires a day before the movie is released is pretty par for the course.

Except for the fact that the trade pubs - Variety and the Hollywood Reporter - always publish their reviews a week or so ahead of release. Embargoing them Just Isn’t Done.

Alas, as bad as it was, it still probably did well enough that there might be a sequel.

It only grossed 90 Million in the US, less than the 124 million budget, but world wide it probably made a profit.

I’m expecting him to meet the other Guy, the Girl, and go hang out at the Pizza Place.

I was, until I saw the trailer. I love Reynolds and the concept of the Green Lantern Corps, but it looks like crap and my enthusiasm died months ago.

Lol! For the record, I am said Doper and here the terms of the bet.

Right now, Thor has grossed $174M, with an opening weekend of $65.7M. It is currently ranked #4 for 2011.

Captain America (the 3rd film in the wager) opens July 22.

X-Men: First Class–$100M thus far–was not part of this bet.

Initial reviews are not looking good. 29% on the Tomatometer.
