Which superhero flick will bomb the worst this year?

And that’s kind of my point though, as advertisements the trailers are supposed to bring people in, give them a feel for the film, create some buzz. As purely marketing tools your example of TPM seems to have done its job and worked well.

The Cpt. America trailer didn’t seem to have done that for me… and especially not for the 16-23 year old demographic.

Odd, everyone else I have talked to both online and IRL said the trailer had them psyched to see the movie.

My problem with the CA trailer is a nitpicky one… unless my sense of perspective is all screwed up and I missed the fact that he was a midget, the “too small to be in the army” guy seemed, in fact, about average height and weight for a 1942-era American male coming off 13 years of Great Depression.

Oh, I think it will do pretty well, but I’ve noticed their advertising is pretty light on TV. How old are you and your peers? Over/under thirty? I think it will probably come in somewhere between Thor and X-men, maybe. Probably beat out Green Lantern, but will it be the next Iron man or Spiderman?.. probably not.

You also have to consider overseas and worldwide take. I can’t see Captain America doing as well as Thor in that arena.

My problem with the trailer was that the short, skinny, CGI’d Chris Evans just looked freaky. With that thin body and pointy face he kinda looked like a steretypical grey alien (but pinker).

Box Offixe Mojo page on this (they include Priest)

Based on thise stats, it looks like Thor will beat Green Lantern (Thor had a better opening weekend AND a better 2nd weekend drop)

Brian

One thing I did notice is that Green Lantern hasn’t debuted in Europe yet. So the box office there could bring it to break even.

Not Europe-wide, but it has in some areas, notably the UK and Ireland.

True, but: Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, South Korea, and Spain each produced between $10 million and $20 million in gross receipts for Thor.

Green Lantern hasn’t yet debuted in any of those countries, and to date it has grossed about $137 million worldwide (against its budget of $200 million).

All I am saying is that when Green Lantern is in full release worldwide it could easily reach and exceed its break-even point. (Before DVD sales.)

Even though I thought Green Lantern was mediocre, I am rooting for the film to turn a decent profit. Mainly because I am an old comic book geek who would welcome yet a few more super hero films. Bring on Flash! Bring on Aquaman!

Oh, and how about an animated take on Captain Marvel? He is cartoon-y enough to seem suited to that treatment. Shazam!

I’m not so sure. Allegedly the marketing budget for Green Lantern was 100 million, making the true cost of the film closer to 300 million. By your figures they’re not even halfway there yet.

Fair point. I hadn’t considered the marketing budget.

Well, going into this opening weekend for Capt. America things don’t look too good. It has been pretty much panned and gotten critical or average reviews which I had sort of deduced from the trailer. Seems like a stinker…

71% fresh is “pretty much panned”?

Actually, it has 71% rating from Rotten Tomatoes and has received good to excellent reviews.

Well, the local review gave it two and a half stars. That’s a C- almost a D in my book. The problems seem to be that is a disjointed “montage”. No meat, where’s the beef and action?. Simply a construction for the upcoming Avengers Movie. No true story or conscience… very cheezy/ Sorry, not my kind of movie in this barrenland of 3-D, CGI, and shorthand of poor modern drama and story. It has nothing to tie it together. It is a flawed movie and I bet the box office will reflect that.

Your local review is what we call “anecdotal evidence.” RottenTomatoes has it at 73% with an audience rating of 86%, and Metacritic has it at 67%.

I saw Captain America last night and really enjoyed it. It wasn’t the best movie I’ve ever seen, but it entertained me. And being entertained for a couple hours is all I look for in a movie.

To provide some perspective for these numbers

Captain America is rating 73%/86%
Thor rated 77%/80%
Green Lantern rated 26%/54%

Those numbers bode well for the movie’s success.
