One of these 4 year old thread ideas I’ve played with but never used. At least I don’t think so.
Which video game character have you sent to the great beyond the most?
For me it’s Jak on the PS2. I’ve played through the series a few times and they just make it so easy. There are probably a few times where I’ve died a dozen times within the space of a minute on some dangerous race track or something.
When you take into account the massive number of games he’s been in, any lifetime to date ranking along these lines would have to default to Mario Mario for the vast majority of gamers.
I’d doubt if even Pac Man could compete, due to the lack of success of his various retreads. But he’d be my next guess (though not for me personally; excluding Luigi Mario, my second place would probably be Mega Man or Sonic the Hedgehog).
If I were to timeline my record it would look something like this.
1982-1985 - The adventure in Aztec. Never could master that Apple game. In fact never got very far since I was just a kid.
1985-1987 - The schooner in Tombstone City.
1987-1993 - The ship in Crystal Quest.
1993-2003 - Mario
2003-Present - Jak.
First Mario, then probably Ratchet from the Ratchet & Clank series. Then probably the airplane from the old 1942 arcade game – my arms used to be so sore from playing that game after school.
While Mario almost certainly tops the list of actual characters I’ve died as, the shooter-thingy from Tempest may have racked up more actual deaths. I’ve played Tempest a lot…very badly, for the most part.
The AFGNCAAP (“ageless, faceless, gender-neutral, culturally ambiguous, adventurer person”, which is what the Dungeon Master calls you at one point) from “Zork: Grand Inquisitor” probably deserves an honorable mention because I’ve made a point to find every possible way for that character to die (or suffer totemization), just to read the funny comments about it. The “jump in bottomless pit” death is probably my favorite.
Probably Jet Set Willy - in those sorts of games it was all too possible to jump into the next screen, straight on to a baddie, triggering an ‘infinite death loop’, where the game would restart you at the top of your ill-fated arc. (Obviously this would only be infinite if using an infinite lives cheat…)
It’s probably a four way tie between Samus Aran, Mega Man, Simon Belmont, and Mario.
I was originally going to say Link, because he is my favorite game character and Zelda is the best video game series and I replay the games all the time, but I generally don’t die that often.
And I just wanted to point out that I wrote this post in Firefox 2.0, which automatically spellchecks as you type and puts the red zig-zagy lines underneath mis-spelled words, and apparently Belmont is in its dictionary.
I hate to burst your bubble, bouv, but Belmont is a not-terribly uncommon last name. There was a famous rich family of Belmonts back in the day. It’s not too surprising.
IAN the OP, but it seems to me that a distinction should be made between certain genres: FPS, RTS, MMORPGs, and other game types out to be in 4 separate categories because the nature of the gameplay inherently biases a poll towards certain game types when you look at them all together.
When asked which videogame character I have died the most as, I subconciously excluded non-characters like the minions in an RTS, or the non-entity player characters of multiplayer FPS experiences. I also have to say that I tend to not think of computer games whenever I see the term “videogame” used. That makes me think of consoles, hand-helds, and arcades.
Just a thought I had; that we might want to parse these out:
For FPS, for me, it’d be generic character X, from Perfect Dark (the first one, for N64).
For RTS, Human Footman in the Warcraft RTS games (Warcraft 2 if I was forced to pick).
For MMORPG, Blue No. 3, my invincible/super strength tanker in City of Heroes; mind you, he’s a successfull tanker, but being a shield for your team necessarily means a high fatality rate, and he’s one of my highest MMO characters.
For other game types, see my previous post.
