It doesn’t seem like it would be that common of a name, so it’s always tickled me that there are two of them.
The writer.
Though I am vaguely aware that the musician exists, I couldn’t tell you what he plays/what genre he works in.
Musician Warren Ellis is known for Dirty Three, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and Grinderman.
I always think of the Bad Seeds when I see his name, just because he’s such a wild man and such an awesome violinist.
In order of exposure for me, it was Bad Seeds Ellis --> *Transmetropolitan *Ellis (and on to pretty much everything else of his) --> Dirty Three Ellis, but I always think of writer Ellis first, then musician Ellis, and I often forget about the Bad Seeds stuff for some reason.
rec.arts.comics.marvel.xbooks. He posted in there, which delighted me to no end, and I was interested in his run on Excalibur when it came out. Then I followed The Authority for a while.
Oh yeah, it probably helps that writer-Ellis and I got into an image fight on Livejournal once.
What, no “Internet Jesus?”
I interacted with him a few times on the old Scans Daily Livejournal board.
I’m mostly a pre-Murder Ballads Bad Seeds fan, and also a huge Freak Angels fan, so while I know both, it’s comics Warren that I think of first.
anal skrulls!
The Bad Seeds were my first Warren Ellis exposure, from which I went on to Dirty Three, and right now, I’m loving the collection of soundtracks by him and Nick Cave that recently came out, White Lunar.
But I still haven’t kicked Freak Angels from my weekly comics go round either, and round these here parts, I’d probably rather expect the writer Ellis to pop up, so I’m a bit conflicted on the answer – went with option four in the end, but it’s context dependent really.
I hadn’t heard of the musician before, but I’ve tended to get Warren Ellis mixed up with Garth Ennis, and now it’s probably going to be worse because I think Nick Cave’s music would go well with Preacher.
Writer, for me. Transmetropolitan is one of the only graphic novel I might put up past Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns.
I think I went to school with a Warren Ellis.
No, not really.
Yeah, that’s the one. But I tended more towards the “Breasts don’t work that way” threads.
