At least the MegaConverter site provides for conversions between Troy and Avoirdupois pounds. The Troy pound is equal to 0.82286 lb. Avoirdupois. If you put in 2,000 Troy lbs. and ask for short tons, you get .82286. (Of course, this may be meaningless if no one in the real world ever measures gold in this manner. FedEx and Ogden & Moffet are going to charge by the Avoirdupois weight, regardless of your jewellers preferences.)
I always remember the question as 'What weighs more, a pound of feathers or a pound of gold?"
Websters, ‘pound’:
any of various units of mass and weight; specifically : a unit now in general use among English-speaking peoples equal to 16 avoirdupois ounces or 7000 grains or 0.45359237 kilogram.
It’s a trick question. I wonder what the answer would be if asked to a spanish speaking person?
A tonne of gold and a tonne of feathers have the same mass, but that was not the question. Weight is a measure of how much force the earth’s gravity exerts on the object. If you pour a tonne of gold and feathers onto a balance to compare, the gold will weigh slightly more. This is because gold has a higher density than feathers and its center of mass would be closer to the earth than the center of mass of the feathers. This is assuming the tonnes are poured into similarly shaped containers on each arm of the balance. If they are shaped differently the feathers could be made to weigh more than the gold.
