Which Weighs More Question, Gold, Feathers. (cant find the answer)

Hi, i know there is a topic here somewhere about how a tonne of feathers weighs more than a tonne of gold, but i just cant find it.

Maybe someone can tell me how gold is measure compared to feathers?

it was something like 2 less oz. to the lb. but i am not entirely sure.

According to this website, gold is measured in troy ounces, which are about 10% heavier than a regular American (Avoirdupois) ounce.

That would allow you to argue an ounce of gold is less than an ounce of feathers, but not necessarily a pound or tonne.

Do a google search on Troy ounces.

Apparently, Troy covers pounds as well as ounces.

At least the MegaConverter site provides for conversions between Troy and Avoirdupois pounds. The Troy pound is equal to 0.82286 lb. Avoirdupois. If you put in 2,000 Troy lbs. and ask for short tons, you get .82286. (Of course, this may be meaningless if no one in the real world ever measures gold in this manner. FedEx and Ogden & Moffet are going to charge by the Avoirdupois weight, regardless of your jewellers preferences.)

This question is silly, since any sentient humanoid would use the metric system instead of the bizarre, illogical imperial system.

Gold is not measured in troy ounces, it is measured in grams. Grams, do you hear me? GRAMS!

OK, “weight” is not measured in grams. But that just goes to show you that the question is misformed. The correct question is “Which MASSES more?”

As far as I know, in English, a tonne (as opposed to ton) always means “metric ton” (1000 kg.) That goes for gold and feathers alike.

I always remember the question as 'What weighs more, a pound of feathers or a pound of gold?"

Websters, ‘pound’:

any of various units of mass and weight; specifically : a unit now in general use among English-speaking peoples equal to 16 avoirdupois ounces or 7000 grains or 0.45359237 kilogram.

It’s a trick question. I wonder what the answer would be if asked to a spanish speaking person?

A tonne of gold and a tonne of feathers have the same mass, but that was not the question. Weight is a measure of how much force the earth’s gravity exerts on the object. If you pour a tonne of gold and feathers onto a balance to compare, the gold will weigh slightly more. This is because gold has a higher density than feathers and its center of mass would be closer to the earth than the center of mass of the feathers. This is assuming the tonnes are poured into similarly shaped containers on each arm of the balance. If they are shaped differently the feathers could be made to weigh more than the gold.

FWIW, a troy ounce weighs more than an avoirdupois ounce… but there are only twelve troy ounces to a troy pound.

So, an ounce of gold weighs more than an ounce of feathers, but a pound of feathers weighs more than a pound of gold.

(Look, I[ don’t make this stuff up…)
