My lynksis router is dying, keeps dropping the link to my laptop.
So it appears to be new router time.
I have an 80211. B/G/N unit now, and the laptop has N, so I think I want to stay with an N unit.
I started looking at units at Amazon and New Egg and frankly I get a little goosey when there are almost as many 1 star reviews as there are 5 star reviews.
From what I can see a Netgear units seem to have the highest reviews.
I like the reviews on the WNR 3500L and the WNR 2000, but my mind is not yet made up.
What say you, the networking experts of the SDMB?
Before you get a new router, try different firmware on the one you’ve got. I used the default linksys firmware for years, and I recently switched to Tomato which improved my router’s performance tenfold. I thought I just had a lousy internet connection, but it turns out that a lot of my internet problems were caused by my router.
IANANEotSDMB, but I do know that you failed to provide a crucial piece of information — what kind of lanmower are you using?
I have a home office with 4 active computers (PCs and Macs) and two Linux file servers. The rest of the house has the recreational computers and a few other network devices (e.g., Roku box) on it. Though much of it is cabled, there is wireless access for our own use in some areas and for the occasional client or visitor.
We have a Linksys 310N router, and it works great. I like working with Linksys because IANANE. For a long time (and at least up until fairly recently), their tech support was top notch. I’ve accessed it via both chat and telephone at all sorts of hours, always found them to be exceptionally polite and when stumped by my problem willing to escalate to higher levels of support. As you can imagine from the basic outline of our equipment above, this isn’t a run-of-the-mill install and there have been more than a few technical questions have popped up. It’s not hyper-technical either, but for the price it’s not quite overkill.
Again, IANANEotSDMB, and YMMV. I do see that some folks have had issues with Linksys, but I can’t tell why our experiences differ.
