Which would YOU rather have: A Kindle Fire or a Playstation 3?

I’ve had a PS3 for years (some may remember the story). About two weeks ago, it died on me – Yellow Light of Death.

Fortunately, I can handle the guts of machinery, so with a little YouTube guidance I opened it up, completely disassembled it, fixed the problem and put it back together. Fingers crossed, I fired it back up – success!

Two days ago it died again. Crap.

Good timing though – Wal-Mart is opening at 10:00 Thanksgiving night and selling PS3 Holiday Bundles for $200. So woohoo, new PS3 for me next week.

I’d love a Kindle Fire, but that ain’t gonna let me finish Fallout: New Vegas.

If I HAD to pick it would probably be the PS3. I like playing games, and I would love a Blu Ray player.

That being said, while I wasn’t a gadget guy when I got it, my wife bought me a Kindle and I love it more than any gift I have gotten from her to date. I still read paper books, of course, but the portability of the Kindle combined with having a dozen books with me at all times just makes it awesome.

PS3, mainly because it’s time-tested proven technology and the Kindle Fire is a brand-new first-generation product that’s bound to have quirks and bugs that haven’t been worked out yet.

ETA: that said, I did buy my GF a Kindle Fire for Xmas and will likely buy myself a PS3.

I own a Kindle and I don’t know what a Kindle Fire is so I guess I’ll take the PS3.

For those who don’t know, the Kindle Fire is more a tablet computer (akin to an iPad) than it is an ebook reader. It isn’t so much a question of books vs. games as it is multimedia tablet vs. games (and blu-ray and so forth).

Actually, the PS3 is an excellent multi-media center for any entertainment displayed on a monitor: games, yes, but also it’s a superb bluray (or any optical disc) player, features native support for online streaming media such as Netflix and Hulu, and the like. You can also link the PS3 wirelessly to shared files on any PC and stream/play them over the PS3. Since my TV and PS3 are wired into my home stereo, this is quite nice.

Games are a minority of how I use my PS3.

PS3 all the way! You can always read on your computer or read actual books, but there’s really no substitute for a gaming console aside from an older/different console or a souped up computer.

Also, Kindle really changed the game with their low-end offerings. You could pick up one of the cheaper e-readers on a holiday sale and not spend much more than you would on a new game.
