Viewing toadspittle’s recent query about black triangle UFOs brought to mind something I heard years ago on the NPR Show “All Things Considered”.
An author was interviewed who had written a book suggesting that a good deal of UFO mythology, including the existence of white aliens and gray aliens, had been invented by the U.S. government.
He said that when UFO enthusiasts shot pictures of experimental aircraft, the government would tell them that they had actually photographed alien spacecraft, but that there was a war going on between two alien races and we were helping the good guy aliens, so it was necessary to keep what they had seen hushed up. I think the good aliens were supposed to be using the earth as a refueling station or somesuch. This approach had the advantage of making anyone who didn’t agree to stay quiet sound like an awful crank. He went on to say that the government sometimes told people that Jesus of Nazareth and other key religious figures had actually been good guy aliens.
Unfortunately, I only came in on the very end of the interview, and I never heard the name of the author or of the book or article he was discussing. I think the broadcast was back sometime in the 80’s; can anyone shed light on who this author was, and where I can see his work?
Could it have been Whitley Streiber?
Quite possibly one of these: Kevin D. Randle, Stephen M. Greer, Dr. Bruce S. Maccabee, Robert Shaprio, Al Hiddell.

The author was a lifeform with a name not readily pronounced using human vocal cords. His work can be viewed in all good bookstores in most of the more cosmopolitan cities. There are of course no such cities (let alone such bookstores) on this planet.
Look for a book called “Watch the Skies”. It was published by the Smithsonian and written by an author so well-known that I can’t recall his name presently. It traces the evolution of the popular UFO mythology.
For example, at one time it seems aliens that were supposedly encountered by us earthlings were very humanoid, attractive/handsome, and dressed like the bus drivers of the day, only in better cloth. Now of course “everyone knows” that aliens really have big teardrop shaped heads, large black eyes, small and very skinny grey or white bodies, and don’t seem to wear clothes at all.
JCHeckler-Yes, up until the 80’s there was a wide plethora of different looking aliens. Travis Walton for example saw two types of Aliens, one type looked like us and the other didn’t (I can’t remember what the other type looked like).
In the early 90’s nearly all aliens were transformed into the typical “grey” big head, small body, type.
That is if you believe this $#%@
