But leave us with a problem just as bad. Jerry Brown.
I am suprised at how many people can not remember how bad a gov he was.
One of his add states that at his stage of life he is ready to do the job, implying that he was not ready until now. this after only 32 years of elected office.
I voted for him as gov years ago and my wife still gives me a hard time for it.
If either one of them get elected we are screwed badly. I am not sure who I will vote for and I wish there was a none above on the ballot.
I don’t know why you say he did a bad job. My recollection is that during his adminstration California was prosperous, education was excellent, and taxes were relatively low.
Not sure what it means for “California to have its own satellites”, but a huge number of satellites are designed and built at JPL, and/or launched from Vandenberg AFB. And I’m certain that there are geosynchronous satellites at California’s longitude, many of them put there specifically for serving California markets.
Specifically what didn’t you like about Brown the first time? Certainly he left the state in good fiscal shape, which given its present condition, is easily the biggest challenge facing any incoming governor.
He proposed the state have its own emergency communication satellite (presumably to keep communications up during emergencies). According to wiki, something similar to his plan was eventually adapted, though it doesn’t say if the system is still in use.
As a state worker we really got screwed. Taxes were high business were leaving Calif to go to other stattes with less taxes. He apponted Rose bird to the Court. Working at San Jose State a lot of programs were closed. Several years for a feew months we did not even get pay checks, pay warents that is a promice to pay us. The banks did not have to take them but thankfuly they did. The rest of the country was in a growing ecconmy and the states was down.
As a California voter who wasn’t even born when Brown was elected Governor I somewhat surprised to find myself nearly ready to vote for him after reading this thread (I will most likely vote for the Libertarian candidate Dale Ogden). It seems that you are the only loud voice of opposition. So can you provide some actual cites to back up your claims. It’s not that I don’t believe you, but you seem to be the lone voice of dissent in a thread that makes Brown look like a far better candidate than Whitman.
By the way there are 4 other candidates on the ballot, you are hardly being forced to vote for one or the other just because most voters will.
If you are in favor of a two party system that’s fine. If you would prefer having more than two viable candidates then how do you justify voting for one of the two major parties when they don’t support your position, just because one of those party’s candidates is inevitably going to win.
Also thanks to Morgenstern, I haven’t read your link yet, but I will be doing so soon.
Because if you don’t, it will help the other candidate you like even less to win. I’d like to vote for Kendrick Meek in the Florida Senate election, but I’ll probably vote for Charlie Crist as having the better chance to beat Rubio.
Brown is doubtless better than Meg, by a long shot. Not that he;s a perfect choice by a long shot, mind you. If the Dem candidate looks like a shoe-in, I often vote Libertarian myself. (I do admit I voted for Arnie, so I do occ vote for a Pubbie) But in this case, the chances of Meg winning are too high, so I will vote Jerry. Might I ask you to join me? Same with Boxer. Unless of course the polls show that either is a cinch on voting day, then I’ll join you in voting Libertarian, just to show the Dems they don’t have a mandate.
YOou wern’t born so I can understand your position. But what I do not understand is how those of who lived in the state when Brown was gov can not remember what he was like. The state was glad when he went out of office. Thought we were done with him. I do wish I had kept the newspaper from that time so I would have the links to make my point, all I have is what I remember.
the jokes and some times the head lines, “Brown is Brown” from the water shortage time came the saying “If it is Brown flush it down”, gov moon beam and much more. When he ran for Pres his own party made a joke about him. No one remembers these.
I believe that Jerry Brown will be bad for the state of Calif.
I believe that Meg will will be bad for Calif. I am not sure which will be worse. We do not have the none of the above choice so I will probably vote 3rd party even though they do not have a choice of winning. This year I am almost afraid to vote because I know I will reget who ever I vote for.
The point is though: you can sit here and say omg, lulz! Don’t you guys remember how we made fun of this tool? But if you don’t provide us with some evidence to your claims as to why he was bad, we have to off of what was already presented. . . which said he actually did a decent job.
As an outside observer, all I can say is the more I read about Brown the more I like him. It’s been a long time since I could say that about a politician.
Indeed, Jerry was around in the heyday of Nicknames for CA politicos, and “Gov Moonbeam” was a nickname used- but somewhat fondly by some. After all, we call the current Gov “Arnie” and “the Governator”, and it’s not really meant meanly.
Brown did a better than average job back then, better than Grey Davis, and was more effective that Arnie-although I did admire “The Governator’s” moxie and stands on many issues.
Just because we make some mild fun at their expense doesn’t mean we hated them. After all, did we make fun of Davis? No- and he was ineffectual.
You know what? In what may be a first for the SDMB(;)) this thread and the additional reading it has caused me to do has just about convinced me. There is a very good chance I will vote for Brown, even though I don’t like the idea in principle.
I really don’t care for Boxer, but having read a bit about Fiorina now I think I may vote for Boxer too. That’s two subjects this thread has changed my mind about; that might really be an internet record :D.
Sorry but I did not keep the news papers or news reports of the time wish id had. I can understand those who did not live it wanting links. Wish I had the computer skills to find them. I am suprised with my generation.
How many people remember Rose Bird? Browns attack against prop 13 or any tax relief for property owners?
So. . . you can’t remember why you didn’t like him- even in general terms, just that you made fun of him? Well, that’s certainly the road to an informed political opinion for me if I’ve ever seen one.
