I used to, just like I used to wade in on the religion threads. But it all just pissed me off and nobody ever changed their position one iota, much less changed their mind, so I decided for my own mental health to disengage.
When I saw this thread I thought, “how come nobody’s mentioned me?” but then I realized it was probably an indication of how successful I’ve been in avoiding those threads, and therefore a good thing.
I suspect that there are many “thoughtful conservatives” on the board who aren’t recognized as such because they are reluctant to discuss politics here. For me, the SDMB is a pleasant social club. I usually stay out of political and religious debates, since I think it’s unlikely that I will change anyone’s mind, but very likely that I will make enemies out of people who might otherwise enjoy rubbing elbows with me.
I was this close to mentioning you as one of the posters I know hold conservative viewpoints but aren’t caught up in the partisan bickerfests that GD and the Pit have become over the past few years. Kudos.
I’d like to think I am a “thoughtful conservative” but I rarely post that much and I always am wary to dive into a thread without as much material as I can to back me up. Which usually means I don’t post at all…
Also, because I think I lean a good bit libertarian, I disagree with the “liberal” posters less than a stronger social conservative would.
I’ve always liked John Mace and Jodi’s posts, though I have a hard time describing them as true conservatives. Aren’t they just really sort of dead center but not apparent leftists? John Mace, in particular, impressed me in the Duke rape case debacle.
I’ve also been incredibly impressed by how polite Mr. Moto is even though the stuff he writes generally sends my eyebrows to my scalp (see, the recent John Ashcroft thread).
I like that Bricker will change his views on occasion. Not necessarily to ones I agree with or something, but I think it speaks to the fact that he has an open mind.
Then again, I’ve never really minded Dio’s posts and he seems to be a maelstorm of controversy, so take my appreciation for what it is!!
(Don’t know how to describe myself, politically. I’d say I’m dead-center. By which I mean that I generally dislike all politicians regardless of political affiliation (I switched my own affiliation from Republican to Independent* a while back), am moderately socially liberal and generally pretty fiscally conservative.)
*I see now that all this Gonzalez stuff is coming to light it was a big mistake
This is too funny…I was just coming back to mention you. I think it’s quite possible that most folks around here don’t know you are conservative, but when I see even a passing comment someone around here makes that indicates that they are, I tend to remember it.
I may get my “thoughtful” status revoked for this, but I would also add Shodan. I know a lot of folks don’t like his style, but he’s smart & I like that he is direct and gets to the point. You don’t have to be long-winded to be thoughtful.
