Who are the leading lights in the American education system today? I’m really interested to know which individuals are having the greatest influence on American education today. I do understand that the systems of teaching will vary from state to state, and that curricular content will also vary from state to state, but all schools within the US must follow basic federal guidelines in oder to operate. My focus is on the individuals/educators/theorists who influence government policy the most.

I’m not sure I could name which movers and shakers are actively teaching at present, but if you want to know about some of the most influential authors on education policy, you might look at this New York Review of Books article about Diane Ravitch and Michelle Rhee.

This is a pretty good list. I would personally add Sal Khan, Daphne Koller and Andrew Ng, Sebastian Thrun, David Coleman, and all the leaders of the top universities and state school systems.
