Who are the women who "star" in Internet porn?

Suppose you have a very big ego but no skills or exceptional talents and you really want attention. I can’t think of an easier way to get it. Like a lot of things in life it gets down to identity and trying to stand apart.

You don’t think that there is a “cost” when a woman’s friends, husband’s friends, her whole office and her children and their friends get a bird’s eye view of her doing deep throat, getting facials, and taking it up the ass?

This has nothing to do with my values, but I think that after living more than 6 decades in this society I have a fairly good understanding how people react to stuff like this. It takes a helluva lot less than this to creat major scandal in most people’s lives.

It’s the 21st century equivalent of getting a tattoo.

Nice poster handle/topic combination.

Well, in this case, I think it is extremely questionable that the “straight” guys are actually straight. Straight men willing to do this are probably MUCH rarer than women willing to do the porn thing.

With porn on the net, you may have no idea where it came from originally. It may have come from a pay site, once upon a time; or it may have come from pics originally intended to be private (there was a big scandal recently about hackers stealing private sex pics and posting them, but I suspect far more common is one of the parties - typically the guy - taking pics ‘just for us’ and then posting them); or, as others have said, it may have been deliberately uploaded by fetishists who enjoy having strangers look at it.

Just guessing here, but I would not be surprised if many of the pics where the woman’s identity was obvious but the man’s was not (for example, blowjop POV pics where you can see the woman’s face but only the man’s dick) were of clients taking pics of prostitutes, presumably with their permission.

One aspect of this is that the ubiquity of cellphones with cameras and “sexting” is, for many, breaking the notion that having one’s sexual acts viewed by others is fundamentally shameful.

Well, we can’t say who is watching this or that website, but those who do will blast past all kinds of unknown women, but will take notice very quickly if they see someone they know. It is kind of like walking around in a crowd. Your eyes automatically filter out all people you don’t know, but if you see someone you know, you instantly notice.

Please be serious. Getting a tattoo IS SO 21st century. Some absurd percentage of twenty-something women have tattoos, which they will come to regret as they grow older.

No such percentage are appearing in free porn movies.

Except for a few fetish sites, nobody wants to see old women taking off their clothes. So a young woman who decides to do this is basically writing off any possibility that she will advance and be taken seriously when she gets older.

I assure you that if she ever is a candidate for CEO of Hewlett-Packard, Senator, or Governor someone somewhere will post “Hey doesn’t the candidate look an awful lot like the actress in this clip?” Just one post to a popular bulletin board (like SDMB!) and her career is over. No one will take her seriously. Or she will have to devote a lot of time and resources to damage control that she could have devoted to publicizing her qualifications or smearing her opponent.

You can argue logically that this shouldn’t be so. That the guys buying the porn (anonymously) should be the goons and not the one collecting the cash (with her face shown publicly). You can argue that men’s careers don’t necessarily end the first time they tweet a dick-pic (although they might have to “go to rehab” and explain why they did it in every interview for the rest of their lives).

It’s not fair. It’s not logical. But a woman already has to overcome so many obstacles that a man doesn’t in order to rise to the top in business or government. Why would she want to burden herself with yet one more?

Are you sure “nobody pays”? I’m pretty sure the women who are “acting” or “modeling” are getting paid something. And for many, “hey, do you want to earn $500 for an hour’s work?” is appealing enough, and probably becomes something they do again and again. Even though you can visit and watch the website for free, the website owner is making money (through referral links, advertising, etc.) and I assume the photographer/videographer is making money, the website host is making money, and, yes, the actress/model made some money when the performance is shot.

And “making a living” means different things to different people. $500 here and $500 there and you are perhaps making a better living than waiting tables or doing nails.

Now, as for the purely exhibitionist stuff by true amateurs, I’m guessing it’s a combination of not understanding and/or not caring about future consequences. What is more curios is the amateur stuff such as the girlfriend doing her guy (or more likely the ex-girlfriend). I wonder about the legality of posting it on the internet, as I can’t imagine all of these girls are signing release forms.

Appearing in porn today is as getting a tattoo was in the past.

Pretty much all the reasons that people might have given to get a tattoo back when it was unorthodox to do so are reasons they could give to appear in porn for free.
For people who want to be exhibitionistic or upset daddy or “express their individuality” or more generally épater la bourgeoisie.

It is in part because tattoos are so common that they no longer fit the bill, short of seriously messing up one’s appearance.

I’m guessing the one with the spousal nickname?

Until now, I wouldn’t have guessed I watch too much porn but I know exactly who you’re talking about. On the OP, I will support Orwell and Bayard I know (in a friend of a friend way) two women who do porn whom I could easily find on a free sites who are in fact paid performers.

Wait … what?

What if I never want to be on the top? Cause I don’t, you know. I don’t want to be CEO or anything like that.

You may or may not be right - I don’t really see posing nude to have the same stigma as acting in hardcore porn for example - but not every woman aspires to be something amazing in her life. World needs ditch-diggers, too.

I feel like this thread has buried the lede.

A lot of the stuff on free sites is taken from pay sites. That’s been said over and over. But also, the free sites usually have a LOT of advertising. And at an average click-through rate of around 1-2% (I work in advertising), that’s going to add up to some real money. For the most part, people don’t create free porn sites for the fun of it.

Yup.

She’s been doing it longer than a decade too, right? Wow, yep… 16 years according to her (SFW) wiki.

Should I be glad or sorry that I have no idea what you guys are talking about?

Edit: now I do. Thanks GrandWino.
