Benes (pronounced Benesh, because an S with a diacritical mark called a hachek, š, is “sh”), is a very common Czech name, and I always assumed that’s what her name was.
There are a lot of letters Czech shares with English orthography, but pronounces differently, and some that are pronounced different ways depending on diacritical marks.
Immigrants often try to get people to use their original pronunciation, but their kids either capitulate to the way it looks, or change the way they spell it. You have cousins, one named Benes, and another named Benesh.
