there is a guy in a synagogue singing this very nice song, which I would like to have the name of, so that I may download it and listen to it again and again and again, as is my habit when I find a song I like.
I believe the song is called ‘Avinu Malkenu’ though there are many weird English spellings for the title, thats the most popular one I could figure out according to google. Also, this theory is based upon part of what I heard, the begining doesn’t seem right, and the footage was definately spliced together so I’m not certain what the deal is.
On a side note, that synagogue happens to be down the road from my house.
One another side note, the hippy jam band Phish apparently does a cover of this.
It’s definitely a few spliced together. He starts out with “My Yiddishe Momma,” (which would make sense based on the grandmother story he led in with)
Then he sings a few lines from the prayer “Yismechu b’malechut-cha” (best transliteration I can find) (“…Shomrei, shomrei, shomrei Shabbat V’kor’ei oneg Shabbat…”) and then gets into Avinu Malkeinu.
I am currently hating everybody on iTunes, because they arent singing it exactly like he does, but I have faith I will find a version I like (of at least one of those songs mentioned) eventually. Now I at least know what songs to search for!
Avinu Malkeinu and Yismechu are both Jewish prayers, meaning that the words are set, but the tunes aren’t. In general, for many prayers, there are many possible tunes, some more traditional, some modern, some adapted from elsewhere, and on top of all of that, different people will put their own spins on things. So you might not be able to find precisely what you’re looking for.
