Who do we have to thank for the fact that it is possible for us to live in the city?

Guess you have never seen NYC’s Mayor Bloomberg.

Ah well, but just what godlike figure is it that does the shaping?

Human beings are animals like any other, and will form social structures organically. No, it doesnt take much effort to figure out that to live peacefully, you have to let your neighbor live peacefully as well. There is no such thing as an unshapen mass of humanity, unless you perceive humanity to be only so much clay for some weird metaphysical artist to manipulate.

No, no one owes anyone anything for living in a high population area, unless maybe you are too poor to pay your bills, in which case you arent paying for any of the services you may get. Living in a high population area isnt some privelage that someone is ‘letting’ you have.

In case it wasn’t clear, I would rather they didn’t do such a thing. I want them to feel that they don’t have a thankless job, because in some ways it is.

Hence, my response. Though I have others. I would like to thank modern farmers, and those who helped farming technology be what it is, for living in a city which otherwise couldn’t support itself. No, of course these people are free to find some other work if they don’t think they’re being paid fairly. They are also free to riot, revolt, and exhibit other behavior besides peaceful coexistence.

I am not an army of one here. It takes an entire society peacefully coexisting to enable me to have the job I do in the place I live. I’m not selling myself into slavery, I’m thanking them. Christ.

I thank God every day that I don’t have to live in the city.
