Who do you like better: Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd?

I’ve recently started listening to Pink Floyd, and I must say, I am impressed as to how good this band was.

I had already discovered Led Zeppelin and I am also a huge fan. Recently I have been doing some research on both these bands out of pure interest.

Did you know that Led Zeppelin has sold over 300 million albums? Or that Pink Floyd sold 250 million albums?

Although some claim that these two bands can’t be compared, I disagree. Both these bands can write songs and play the guitar quite well. They’re both British and they both have shaped Rock and Roll history. They are still both popular today. That is enough for me, to start a comparrison thread. This is not meant to belittle any band, but merely to see what some people think.

This brings me to my question: Which of these two bands do you like better and why?

As you might guess from my username, I am wild about Pink Floyd. Led Zeppelin is just “meh” to me. Not bad, but not great. I can’t explain exactly why; musical taste is hard to justify. I like what I like 'cuz I like it.

I’m also a big Pink Floyd fan. So I’ll have to go with them over Led Zep.

Zep is awesome, but Floyd all the way, for sure.

This is like asking me who I love more; my Mother or my Father.

Pink Floyd in a heartbeat. I simply prefer their music. Zepplin had nothing like The Wall, Dark Side of the Moon, or Wish You Were Here. I’d rather listen to the Yardbirds than Zepplin most days.

Wow, very one sided to say the least.

I dig Zep. Watching John Bonham play the Moby Dick solo on one of their DVDs was amazing. Pink Floyd gets a bit too conceptual for my tastes.

I can’t abide Pink Floyd; any time I hear one of their songs it feels like I have to be on LSD to make any sense of it.

Zeppelin rules! <raises hands, makes head banging movements>

I have more reverence for Floyd in terms of their creativity and their depth.

But if I’ve got a road trip to go on, I’m bringing Zep.

Pink Floyd by a long shot. The Zep had quite a few good songs. Pink Floyd had Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Animals, and Wish You Were Here, all GREAT albums. Their earlier stuff was also interesting, but not nearly as listenable, IMHO.

Floyd, definitely. Zep’s only okay.

The only Pink Floyd album I can listen to anymore is Piper At the Gates of Dawn. But I rate that as one of the top 4 or 5 best UK psych albums ever, so I’d rather listen to that than pretty much anything by Led Zeppelin…

Led Zeppelin, definitely. I can’t think of a single song of theirs that I don’t like. I have to be in a very specific mood to listen to Pink Floyd.

Depends on my mood. I will rarely switch channels if Floyd comes on, but I will if I’m not in the mood for Zep. OTOH, if I am in the mood, the volume gets cranked, the air guitar gets limbered up, and we rock.

Ask me my favorite cat…it’s easier to answer.

(Not really. I love both my mistresses the same. Honest, girls.)

Floyd. Zep rocks but Floyd gets into my soul.

Many years ago I actually imposed a rule upon myself that I can never change stations if a Pink Floyd song is on. I have a similiar rule for Prince songs unless it’s 1999, and then not only can I, I must.

Zep. I like Zepplin a lot and I don’t much like Pink Floyd.

Well, I’d Pink Floyd a slight edge. Better career overall, though Led Zep did some great songs and albums.

OK, now I’ve lost all respect for you. Care to tell us what the traumatic experience was that you had in 1999?
